Genetics

Hi everybody!!! This is my first 9 fanfic, so I hope it's good. Sorry if the characters are a bit out of character.

Summary: While walking through a library, 5 trips over a very big book. He opens it to a random page and starts to read a very strange chapter. This is a one-shot, and it is slightly 5x6.

9 and all its characters belong to Shane Acker. Campbell-Reece Biology: Eighth Edition also does not belong to me.

On another note, this is set during an alternate timeline where no characters died.

Now on with the story!!

It was dark inside the library. 5 could barely see his hand in front of his face let alone where he was walking. He remembered the conversation he had with 7 and 9 about two hours ago.

"No, I can go alone. You stay here and watch the twins," he said.

In retrospect, that was not such a good idea. It was almost sunset, and with only one optic it was very difficult to see. 5 didn't think that 9, even with both of his optics, would be able to see.

Why did I want to show them that I was brave? he thought. It's not worth falling down every five minutes.

He was broken out of his thoughts when he tripped over something. His leg hit the corner of it; he hissed at the sting.

Now what did I trip over this time? he asked himself. There was an opening in the roof above him, so this time, he could actually see why he fell. It was a book. A very large book.

Hmm, Campbell-Reece Biology: Eighth Edition, what's that? he thought. Probably some human hobby.

He grabbed a corner of the book and flipped it open with all his strength. Even with one optic, he could still read efficiently. He saw that the page he opened to was titled Chapter 13: Genetics.

Genetics? What's that?

5 kept reading until he finished the chapter. He learned that human "parents" had certain traits and characteristics that they passed on to their "offspring".

He looked up at the sky and realized that it was getting late. The sunset was starting to end, and it was getting darker. He was about to leave when he sensed movement behind him.

He tensed, thinking that it was a machine, but relaxed when he turned around and saw that it was 6.

"6? What are you doing here?" 5 asked, a bit confused.

"I got worried when you didn't come back," stated the younger stitchpunk. "7 told me you were at the library. I'm supposed to bring you back." The sixth stitchpunk paused and looked at the book. "What'cha reading?" he asked.

5 looked at the book. "Something really interesting called genetics." When 6 looked at him, puzzled, he added, "Genetics is the study of why certain humans look alike, I think."

He proceeded to tell the black-and-white stitchpunk about parents and offspring.

"7, 8, and 1 look a bit alike," said 5 after 6 finally got the meaning of genetics. "They could be related. Same thing with 3 and 4. Even 2, 9, and I look sort of the same."

6 nodded happily. Then, suddenly, his gaze fell to the floor, his face looking sad. "I guess I don't belong here. I don't look like any of you. I'm different-looking."

5 felt extremely sad at this, though he didn't know why. Suddenly, he grabbed 6's shoulders and said firmly, "Of course you belong with us."

After a moment of standing like this, 6 finally wrapped his arms around the fifth stitchpunk and hugged him. 5 returned the hug.

"Let's go back to the others," 5 said.

"Yeah," 6 agreed, pulling away from 5. They began to walk.

"You know, who needs genetics anyways?" said 5.

The End

I hope that wasn't too horrible. It was supposed to be slightly 5x6, but more friendship than romantic.
