Do you ever just notice someone straight away? And you can't get them out of your head? That's what it felt like when I first saw Layla. It was like being punched in the gut. She has this look of total innocence and vulnerability about her, and yet when you really look at her, you can see in her eyes, hidden away is a hidden strength.
It's a shame she's in love with her best friend Will Armstrong. I can practically hear you wondering, how do you know? I can see it in her eyes, the way she looks at him, the way she hangs on to every word that comes out of his annoying mouth. In the same way that I can tell he doesn't feel the same way about her, he only see's her as another love interest to add to his growing collection.
I notice everything about her. The way she laughs, the way she rubs her hand across her forehead when she's nervous. The way she blushes in shy embarrassment when the attention is on her, and her eyes dart in every direction looking for a possible escape route, biting her lip anxiously. Everything.
Turns out she's a sidekick. A real badass with nature. I saw her today, walking around with a group of sidekick friends that she hangs around with a lot. No Will to be seen. She had a totally dejected look on her face but for a second, just a second, our eyes meet and her mouth lifted a little into a small resemblance of a smile, it warmed my cold heart just a little as I smiled back.
I'm waiting on her at the Paper Lantern, figures I'd be working when she's there but to be honest, it's a good thing because maybe now I can actually talk to her and have a conversation with her without Stronghold getting in the way. I can see her now, looking round the room searching for something or someone, and as our eyes meet, her eyes lighting up as a relieved smile graces her lips, I finally understand what it's like to burn.
Because sometimes when you mix fire with nature a rare beautiful thing can come out of it...
