Why Never Matters

Once in a golden hour

There was one diamond minute

Paved with sixty silver seconds

He walked, a silent shadow in the even quieter world.  Flickers of moonlight washed over him, allowing an eerie look to settle over him.  The earth rumbled quietly, ominously.  His footsteps were light and even, making hardly a sound.  Deep pools of dark brown flicker at every sound.  A crunch of leaves from behind him puts him on his guard, and he whirls to face his adversary.

It is she, a unnerving shadow in the world of light.  She stood, seemingly glowing in the night, her pale features enlightened by the same moonlight that casts shadows on he.  She raises a single eyebrow, as if to say, Why?

"You know it's better this way."  He turned away from that pale face, trying to ignore her.  She said nothing.  "You know it is."

"It isn't."  Her emeralds, gleaming in her eyes, flash at him, challenging him to protest.  "Why is this better?"

It came hidden

As an ordinary minute

Like all the rest

"I can't stand this life, not anymore."  He allowed himself, for a minute, to let those memories pour back in, let the anger and sadness flow freely through his veins.  He had given them his trust, his greatest gift, and they had shattered it, through some stupid joke that had meant more to him than anyone in the world.  "Nobody will miss me."

"I would."  He looked up, startled.  Her pale skin catches the moonlight and she seems to be shining.  Her gloved hands extend towards him, as if trying to pull him back.  "I would."

"You're lying."  He stared distantly into space for a second.  "Why would anyone care?"  He clenches his fist, remembering the times he had been lied to.  "You're lying!!"  The earth rumbles fiercely, and all the rage he felt pours out.  He turns again to continue.

"Why?  Why are you going?"  He pauses again, her words replaying in his ears.  "You're so willing to leave all this behind?"  She lays a hand on his shoulder.

"Why doesn't matter.  It's just the way things are!"  He jerked away from that hand, and turns to glare at her.  "I don't need a reason!"  He slowed his already rising breathing, and his glare softened.  "But I just can't take this!!  I've taken it for this long…  It's time to get out."  He turned away.

"I'll miss you."  She said it sadly, almost wistfully.  "I truly will, even if no one else does…"  He smiled, once, and continued walking.  She stared after him as he left, watching him walk away forever.

No one treasured it

Or knew what it was

Until it was lost forever
