Fuji-ototo (my esteemed son) came up with an interesting idea for one shot involving a certain Seigaku player and a serpent…
In a Snake's Eye
By Tora Macaw
Behold, the serpent. A little creature, sometimes seen, often not. An animal perfectly harmless unless provoked or hungry, then watch him rear up to strike, his mouth open, a low angry hiss escaping him. Today, this belly crawler is hungry, ravenous, in fact. At times, this villain from Eden may be slow as it takes a casual stroll about its territory. A serpent few remark upon but then, the viper kicks into overdrive, its long sinuous body whipping at high speed throughout its home space. A reptile that devours its prey, chasing its tail.
This growing serpent is a monster to be feared, a creature despised. The writhing, intricate patterns of its coils are as a wild dance, its scales making a harsh, angry sound but this day, the viper moves in silence, a movement, a lunge! The serpent strikes its prey! It is without mercy, without thought! Only one blind instinct rules – eat, grow, live. As the slithering reptile grows, so does its homeland shrink. The snake becomes all-consuming, all flee in fear before it. A curve, a bend, fleeing prey is caught between strong jaws, a swift, cunning movement is all that stands between life and death. The serpent has won, the viper feeds, continuing to grow. Now, it is clearly seen, ever enlarging, ever in danger of falling victim to its own great size. Food has grown careless, it now pops up right in front of the voracious creature, to vanish within its gluttonous maw. The serpent smiles with the ease of the capture of its prey, it is proud of its enormous strength, its lightening speed.
The serpent has an admirer. Unbeknownst to the creature, the human male watches, enjoying its flawless beauty, its writhing grace. He is immensely proud of his elongated friend, a creature much like himself, a loner, a hisser, a human who strikes, a human of grace. Eyes gleam, lips lick in eager anticipation as the snake feeds again. It grows, becoming ever more powerful. A record is about to be broken. Rearing back, the serpent is about to strike but pauses at a sudden low sound. The sound rapidly becomes a shrill ring, the snake completely freezing. Cursing, the human answers the ill-timed summons with wrathful grace.
"What the hell is it, Eiji-sempai?"
"Kaidoh? Hey, where are you? The games about to start!"
Throwing a quick glance at his watch, the dark haired youth hisses with annoyance then silences his phone with a hard, angry jab of his thumb. A loud beep breaks the quiet, the boy swears. His game of 'snake', a game so close to breaking his own high score has been so rudely interrupted, the score shattered. The incredibly long electronic serpent has slammed into the screen's edge. Game over!
Heaving himself to his feet, Kaoru Kaidoh, the mamushi of the Seigaku tennis club regulars irritably shoves his mobile phone into his pocket then sprints away to the nearby tennis courts. Later, when he is on his own once more, he will revive his serpent and the dance will continue.
Endless
