Chapter 1: Dying Hope

Everything had been the word I loved to use

The word I thought that meant nothing

But in the end, if anyone said "I want EVERYTHING"

I would turn away from them

Hating the word

Even though I had used it all through out my life

Until that fateful day

When I encountered my despicable fate

I noticed

That

It would be impossible

To obtain everything

"Mamaa, I want everything!" I still remember myself telling my mother that. She had looked at me with sorrow in her eyes, the sadness that she thought I would never have to know. "Erza, someday you may really achieve your wish, but never be too ambitious." My mother said, her auburn hair in a bun, her cyan eyes looking at my despairingly.

That was the moment when all hell broke loose in our town. Bandits. Men and women clothed in black and armed with sharp weapons rushed into our small but cozy cottage, they kicked down the wooden door that I had always loved to knock. The men crashed through all the windows I was told to wipe each day, and one particular bandit was holding an axe. An axe for what? I had been so young then, my scarlet hair short, but I knew what I saw. My dad, I don't remember much of him but I remember his black hair, streaked with grey, and crinkled face with brown eyes, so warm, but so distant all the time. He had told me something, I don't quite remember.

By this time, my vision was already fogged by the tears of fear that were forming. A male bandit, dressed in a midnight-blue cloak, had grabbed the axe and was now sauntering towards me. I, clueless of what was happening, had been hidden in a wooden cabinet inside the kitchen area. My parents were no where to be seen. But I had heard a familiar voice screaming, "My daughter isn't anything valuable! Leave us alone!" It was raspy, like an old voice, but soft, and angry. So angry I could feel it. But I still had the bandit I needed to worry about. I was sure that he was getting closer, with every footstep I heard. I could see his blue eyes shining with joy. Not joy, perhaps hatred and feeling relieved that he could take revenge?

I was usually good at reading people, but this face was confusing.

"Erza!" A sweet voice piped from outside a window above my cabinet. It was clear as day, the one who had yelled was Kagura, my childhood friend. Her voice was like honey, but this time, it was caked with worry and fear.

Whimpering slightly, I ripped my gaze off of the bandit, who was getting closer alarmingly, and at the space above me where the sound had come from. I proceeded to scanning my surroundings, in search of a weapon of some sort. There was something shiny to the left of me. I poked it cautiously, unaware of the heavy breathing coming from in front of me. The bandit had found me. He opened the door of the cabinet and a bright light shone into my eyes, blinding me temporarily. Unsure of what to grab, I grabbed the object I had found earlier and shoved it directly in front of me. With a manly gasp, the raider collapsed, red liquid splattered the front of my white shirt and denim shorts.

I cant believe it. I killed a human being.

I, Erza Scarlet killed.

From above, I head Kagura squeak in pain, it seemed as though someone had caught her.

And then, I heard my mother's scream, then a hollow silence and a deep wail.

What should I do? The knife clattered onto the blood-soaked wooden floor. My eyes were wide open and filled with shock.

"Mama! Papa!" I wailed, completely ignoring Kagura who had been screaming at me for the past few seconds, I had deeper concerns.

A tiny redhead six year is what other people see me as, but truly, I was much more harmful than that. I had gone through much more than they think I did.

I saw my parents being sent to the other world in an incredibly gruesome way. I killed a bandit.

I caused pain for my best friend, who probably hated me by now. I can't believe it didn't occur to me that the raiders could have found her while I was screaming my head off, looking for my mother.

I became a horrible person.

The feeling of hope left me. It never crossed my mind until someone found me, and decided to send me to an orphanage.

While Kagura's parents were found, healthy and unhurt, they had gone to some nearby mountains to pick herbs the day the bandits had come. Lucky them, I had thought. I couldn't help but feel jealous that Kagura's mom had survived the attack, and that her dad was healthy as ever, oblivious that he could have died.

And that's the first chapter, kinda short ehehe. Erza's childhood. Changed a little from the original version. (edited.)
