I do not own any of the characters. I'm also currently playing through the game, so updates may be irregular. This is also my first fanfic. Scary, no? GarnetxZidane elements
Prologue: Dagger Escapes
He dreamt of her long black hair and the small smile she would wear as she turned to him. He remembered her determination to do what was right, the willingness to stand up to authority and the focus needed to accomplish her goals.
Suddenly, two blue hands reached out from the nothingness in his mind, pulling her away. Even as he looked on, trying to catch her hands to pull her out of the darkness, she slowly faded from his sight. And from the far reaches of the bleakness he seemed to stare into, a horrible cackle of laughter mocked his efforts to help her.
With a start, Zidane awoke from his medicinally aided slumber. He was haphazardly sprawled across the marble floor. At first, the thief was unable to recall how he came to be in such an awkward situation, but it slowly dawned on him as he noticed the slumbering bodies of the King Cid, Vivi and Freya.
Zidane feared for Garnet, after all, she was a princess, practically, and traveling between countries seemingly teetering on the edges of war and peace. It was a feeling of hurt which seemed to overtake his heart. In their time together, Garnet grew on him, and he felt something different than he had ever felt before. Now, he knew where he stood with her. Zidane had sacrificed for her, he abandoned his family, the Tartarlus, in their time of peril to help a perfect stranger, and he left job and his friends. For all Zidane had done, it was not enough to garner her trust. And Zidane knew, he would die for her, but now it was all a moot point.
With a heavy heart, Zidane woke Vivi and Freya to begin their journey to Burmecia. To do what he could, and hope the emptiness would go away.
