Socks
Dobby was on his way to clean the attic of his new home. He was so happy now to be free from the nefarious Malfoys. Since being free, he was taken in by Professor Dumbledore sir to take care of his house in Godrics Hollow.
Last week Professor Dumbledore sir had informed him that sir was going to stay here for the weekend. He had worked hard all night continuously to clean, cook and decorate the small cottage.
He was so excited, he wanted every inch of his new home to be perfect. He had taken care of everything except for the attic where sir had told him not to enter, but since sir was going to come here anytime now and he knew sir liked to visit the attic, he thought he'd better clean it.
He finally reached the attic and was stunned to find his master standing in front of an old mirror, the mirror was intricately carved at the edges but it was covered thick with dust.
"Oh, Dobby my elf, are you happy to see your barmy old codger again?" he said, his eyes twinkling with fondness.
"Sir?" Dobby spoke hesitantly. He was shocked to find his master here, he thought master would directly apparate to the living room.
"Sir would you like me to clean this mirror? Dobby doesn't like dust," he said making face at the dirty mirror.
"Oh alright Dobby, go ahead."
Dobby quickly began cleaning the mirror and within minutes it was all clean and shiny.
When Dobby did take a proper look at the mirror, he felt awestruck, the mirror was very intricate as he has previously assumed. But there was something different about this mirror, Dobby felt. He stared at the mirror, but what stared at him back wasn't just him, it was him with tons and tons of socks.
"What do you see Dobby?" his master asked.
"Socks sir, lots of socks, they are colorful with different patterns sir, Dobby likes what the mirror is showing," Dobby answered.
"It is the Mirror of Erised Dobby, it shows one his deepest desire."
"Oh, I always wanted socks sir, when I served the Malfoy family, they abused Dobby very much, all Dobby wanted was to get socks on Christmas and be free sir."
His master smiled, and Dobby felt very good to make his master smile, though he didn't understand what it was in his reply that made Professor Dumbledore sir smile.
"What do you see sir?" Dobby asked, and he felt suddenly very bad to ask such a question to his master. He was just a house elf after all, he didn't have any right to ask such personal questions. Bad Dobby.
"Even I see socks Dobby, after all one can't have enough of them," he said, eyes twinkling with mirth like they always did, and Dobby didn't realize that his masters eyes weren't actually twinkling, they were glistening.
Glistening with unshed tears.
