Not Everything Is Suppose To Come True
My well-worn black boots scuffed the cement as I walked the streets of downtown Toronto. The cool autumn wind whipped around me and pierced through my jean jacket. Shit. When did it start getting so cold? I shoved my hands deep into my pockets and kept walking.
Happy couples and families crowded the sidewalk, making me feel miserable. A teenage couple was headed in my direction. The girl was frickin' giggling as she walked arm in arm with her dopey lookin' boyfriend. I sent them a glare and they hastily crossed the street and eyed me cautiously.
For the first time today, I smiled. The wind picked up and I huddled in my thin coat. A block away, I saw my destination. I was meeting Jimmy at G Major to record a track or two. Evidently, Darius had been impressed by my performance at Jude's release party. Whatever.
I looked both ways and crossed the street. I entered the building to find Jim in the lobby talking with a tall, jock-lookin' guy with black, spiky hair and prep uniform on. It would have been fine and dandy, but, Unfortunately, I knew that jock-lookin' guy, and I didn't want to deal with him. Ever. So I started to back out the way I came, hoping no one saw me yet.
But as luck would have it, Jimmy saw me. Damn it! He'd get suspicious if I turned and started runnin'. And I didn't feel explainin' things to him, but now I was gonna have to. Fuck, I just screwed myself. I hated when I did that. So, I did what I normally did in this situation. I just turned around and got as far as putting my hand on the door handle before I heard his voice.
"Hey, Anna! Where ya headed?"
I winced as he called me by part of my middle name. He was the only one in the world that ever called me by it. I gritted my teeth, whirled around and faced my brother.
"Away from you Patrick, like usual."
"Anna?" I heard Jimmy's voice echo.
I frowned at my boyfriend. "It's part of my lame ass middle name." Then I glowered at my older brother, "Thanks, jack ass."
"He doesn't know your name?" Patrick asked, crossing his arms over his chest.
"He does my name. It's Patsy now."
My brother snorted.
"What kind of name is that?" he demanded.
"A kick ass one."
"Whoa here, children!" Jimmy cried, looking confused and floored, "Somebody tell me what's going on!"
I sighed and punched my brother in the stomach before I faced my boyfriend.
"My real name is Prudence Anna-Theresa St. York." I replied hastily, "My family's the famous socialites that rule the providence."
"Huh." He said thoughtfully, "Obviously, you're the black sheep of the family."
"You got it, Jimbone." I replied, "I've been a runaway for…three years now. I've been moving to various places in the city, but obviously, it's time to move again." I said, staring pointedly at Patrick.
"Oh, give it up, Anna." Patrick groaned, "Just stop this and come home."
"What home?" I demanded, "I was nothing to them and I'm something here. I have everything I've ever wanted."
"Welfare?" my brother retorted.
"A life." I threw up my hands, "There was a reason I left, Patrick. You can't convince me to come back." I groaned in frustration, "I'm outta here."
And with that, I turned on my heel and left.
