"Steven."
"Mmhmm," Hyde moaned. He turned away from the sound.
"Steven."
"No," Hyde groaned. He pulled the pillow over his face.
"STEVEN!"
Hyde sat up and rubbed his eyes. "What? Who?" It took a minute for his vision to clear up. The person sitting on the edge of his bed calling his name was Jackie. "Jackie? "He looked at his clock. "It is 2:30 in the morning."
"I know," Jackie said in a small voice.
"What are you doing here?" Hyde asked. "Are you here to…?
"No!" Jackie snapped. "I just wanted to say hi."
"How did you get in here?" Hyde asked.
Jackie held up a credit card.
Hyde smiled. "You broke in?"
Jackie nodded.
"You broke in at 2:30 in the morning?"
Jackie nodded again.
"You broke in at 2:30 in the morning to say hi?"
"Yes," Jackie said.
Hyde sat up and held his arms open inviting Jackie to scoot up next to him. "Why don't you tell me why you are really here?"
"There was a noise." Jackie said.
"A noise?" Hyde asked.
"At my house. I got kind of freaked." Jackie admitted.
Hyde felt like he had been hit with a brick. "You're all alone there." He said realizing it for the first time. Of course he knew her dad was in jail and her mom was MIA but he never really put it together. Jackie was in that big house all alone. No wonder she never went home. Hyde knew what it was like to be alone. It was hard even for him and he was tougher than Jackie. She was tough for a cheerleader but still… "I can talk to Red…" he started.
"No Steven." Jackie snapped. "I don't want everyone knowing my business. I just…maybe just for tonight I could sleep here. I will be super quiet. No one has to know."
Hyde thought about it quietly. He couldn't send her away. This was the only option.
"Great!" Jackie squealed. She moved away from Hyde to pull her jacket off. That's when he noticed her wearing his Led Zeppelin shirt. The one he gave her for her birthday. The one she said she wouldn't wear.
"Nice shirt," Hyde smirked.
Jackie looked down and blushed. "Whatever" she said.
"You asked me if you had to wear it. I thought that meant it would get stuck in a drawer somewhere." Hyde teased.
"Shut up Steven."Hyde laughed and Jackie slapped his arm. "It smells like you and that makes me feel safe or whatever."
Hyde stopped laughing and this time he blushed. "Oh." He replied. He wrapped his arm around Jackie as she snuggled up to him. They were both silent. "You are safe." He whispered finally. Jackie didn't reply. She didn't have to. That was all that needed to be said.
