The girls of Avatar all have responsibilities to with hold. But who said they want them?
Katara had a hard life in the South Pole. She had to do chores, and she never got to leave home. She also knew that once her father got home, she would be given an arranged marriage. She wanted to leave home and explore the world. She wanted to be able to go out of her house and not freeze to death. She wanted to meet a cute guy that would like her for herself.
When she met Aang and offered to take her to the North Pole, she saw this as her way out. Sure, she was a little nervous about leaving home, but it would be worth it. Then Sokka banned Aang from their village. She was not about to let her one chance to escape leave like that. So she chased after him. Her brother had come as well, but it was worth it. She could finally see the world.
Azula had a hard job as a princess. She had to be prefect all the time. Though she did like being perfect, there were times when she didn't want all the pressure. She wanted to be able to beat up guys on the street and prove that she is better than them. Her father put so much pressure on her, and she really didn't want an arranged marriage. She would beat the crap out of any guy that tried to marry her. They weren't worthy of it.
Then her father gave her a mission. She had to capture the Avatar, her brother, and her Uncle. She had her chance to prove to the rest of the world that she was the best in the world. And she took it.
Mai hated her life. She had to follow all the rules of society. She was supposed to always have a level head. She wanted to write her dark poetry without someone accidentally seeing it and ripping it to shreds. In society, she wasn't able to be herself. Her parents kept moving her around too. She hated moving. She wanted to stay in one place.
Azula showed up soon after her latest move. She offered to let Mai travel with her. Mai had to think about this for a while. She would still have to travel, but she could be herself. She decided to go.
Toph hated with a great passion being rich. The maids had to do everything for her, she couldn't leave her house, she had no friends, and she had to keep up to her parents rules. She hated rules. They restricted her from everything. She wanted to run around in mud and get all dirty. She wanted to beat up anyone that called her weak because of her blindness.
Aang showed up one day at her Earth bending tournament that she had snuck away to. He offered to take her with him. Her heart had stirred at that. This was her first friend and she had a chance to leave everything behind. She didn't have to think twice when her parents said she couldn't go. She ran away with her new friends, and she could finally be like all the other girls she had heard about in stories inside of her prison.
Ty Lee wasn't like all the other girls though. She hated her life as well, but she was different. She wanted to be totally free, not under her parent's rules. But she didn't wait for someone to give her the opportunity of running away from her life. She made her own opportunity herself by running away to the circus. There, she was happy. There were no rules, no nothing.
Then Azula shows up. She got to then have no rules and be with her best friends. She couldn't ask for more.
The girls of Avatar are finally living their lives how they wanted to. They were finally living like the other girls they had always been envious about, not that they'd ever admit it though.
