MURDOCK'S MOONLIGHT MIRACLE

It was Valentine's day. Well, Valentine's night, really. Face was out with a girl (surprise, surprise), Hannibal was with some woman called 'Maggie' (he didn't really care for names much) and B.A was... somewhere.

He was perched on the window sill, looking out at the stars and the huge full moon that floated in the indigo sky. Sighing, he traced the shapes that the bright balls of light made and tried to count them all; he gave up after the first few hundred.

Murdock had never really felt lonesome before.

He decided to try and bury that feeling somewhere deep with the other emotions he didn't want let out. But the more he tried to forget about it, the more it pushed its way back into his mind. As a reflex he scratched and swatted and tried to bat the unwanted thinking monkey's away.

Once again he gazed up at the moon, the luminous, beautiful glow it gave off entranced him. He couldn't tear his eyes away from it, it was hauntingly stunning. If only someone were here to enjoy it with him.

Too many times he'd been alone on this day. He was either trapped in the hospital or on a mission. But tonight he was one single soul, lost among the stars of the evening, all alone, even the voices in his head didn't utter a word. He sighed heavily and slumped against the wall. He couldn't remember the last time he'd felt so low, not since Vietnam.

That was another thing he didn't want to think about.

Like a dog, he started to howl at the moon again and again; he wanted it to hear him, to comfort him, to grant his wish of being in some sort of company.

"Why are you howlin', fool?" A deep voice asked.

Murdock silenced but still watched the moon intently. He mused, "I thought if I howled, maybe something would answer back."

The sound of heavy boots moving across the floor grew louder in his ears. B.A slid next to the Pilot on the window sill but the Murdock didn't even react, just searched the sky with even more intensity.

"There ain't nothin' out there, man, stop looking." The Mechanic grumbled in annoyance.

After one more glance, Murdock ceased but continued to softly wail under his breath. "What's wrong, Murdock?"

"B.A?"

"What?"

"Why do people fall in love?"

After a long pause, he answered. "No one knows exactly why. It's like, 'How do humans talk?', no one knows the answer." He explained. Murdock nodded but still looked puzzled. "What's goin' on in your head, fool? What is it?"

"B.A?"

"Yes?"

"How can people fall in love?"

"What do you mean? I just told you-"

"No, no, I mean...how can people fall in love."

"I don't understand."

Inhaling, he spoke quietly, like he didn't want anyone else to hear. "Whenever someone falls in love they always end up getting hurt. So how can people let themselves get hurt so badly like that?"

"If you love somebody, you can't help it. Like my momma always used to say: 'The heart wants what the heart wants'."

The Captain nodded again.

"B.A?" He asked.

"What now?"

"Why can't I fall in love?"

Painful silence.

"Because... you're to wise, Murdock." The Sergeant replied gently.

They sat there for the rest of the night, completely quiet. And for the first time in months, they didn't argue, didn't annoy or threaten each other in any way, they just sat there, shoulder to shoulder, looking out over the horizon in front of that huge, glorious window, wrapped in a warm cocoon of peace and tranquility. Maybe the moon had made Murdock's wish come true...

"Happy Valentine's day, Baracus."

"You too, fool."
