Hey! Future me here. I am just here to tell you sorry that the beginning of this story is crap, but I wrote it over two years ago and I have been trying to rewrite it, but I just don't have the time. But don't lose hope! I assure you that the later half of the story is much better, so if you just want to skim through the first few chapters, that's fine, but make sure you don't miss the rest of the story! Chapter 15 is where the real story starts. It gets much more interesting later on. Trust me.
This is an alternate storyline for Allegiant. I really don't like the way Allegiant ended up, so I rewrote it. This story will contain a lot of drama and things never seen in Divergent fanfiction before. I hope you like it.
CHAPTER 1
We had been planning out what we were going to do outside the fence for weeks. After all the war and death, we are hoping to start over. Now we are finally leaving to see the outside world. We still do not know anything about what or who we could meet out there. I do not know how long we would be gone. Depending on what we find, it could take weeks. If we get attacked, we have been instructed to call the Dauntless, where all the city's leaders are stationed, and warn them to come and rescue us immediately. Since in the video with mysterious woman who shared my last name, she talked about the importance of the Divergents were in stopping the experiment, we decided to pick from the best suited Divergent for the mission. Tobias, Uriah, and I are included in that group.
We have twenty people in all, most relatively young, each with a skill set useful for any situation we may run into. Tori leads us, and I am her second in command. The Dauntless and anyone else capable carry guns and knives with them, those with out weapons sticking close.
We leave Dauntless when the sun rises, trudging through the city streets as the sun peeks through the gaps between buildings, painting the sky with shades of orange and yellow. After an hour, we reach the dirt roads of Amity, the members that chose to stay there greet us cheerfully
I approach to the fence with Tobias and the rest of the Divergent. We are loaded with heavy bags full of everything we will need and more. I squint up at Tobias, the sun cresting over his head, and smile sadly. He smiles back and quickly looks forward again, pulling at the straps of his back pack nervously. I am nervous too, but I am also excited to see the world we never knew about until a few weeks ago. Well, about as excited as you can be when you know you might die.
We stand in front of the gates now, waiting patiently and impatiently for someone to open them. When I see them start to swing backwards, my heart beats even faster then it already was, my mouth growing dry. I never dreamed this would actually happen. Finding out that, outside the small city you thought was your world, there could be more out there. I always assumed that the leaders would call off the mission and we would go back to our normal lives. As normal as you could get after the war, at least. But now, I couldn't think of not going out there and exploring. There is infinite possibilities of what could exist in the new world, and I want know what it is.
Tobias grabs my hand as we shuffle forward, our boots kicking up the loose dirt. All I can hear is the pounding of my heart in my ears. My anticipation and fear blocks out all else, keeping me from realizing that we have stepped over the barrier that has been trapping us inside for so long. We are free. Free from this torn apart world that we have lived in all of our lives. Free from its rules and restrictions. We don't have to live in fear.
We just keep walking for hours, seeing nothing but trees that have shed their leaves, littering them across the ground riddled with knotted roots and fallen branches. There are no discernable paths, just a few clearings that we stumble opon every so often. We stop to rest a few times to rest and rehydrate, but never for long. We want to keep going as long as possible. After many hours in the baking sun, the fluxuating temperatures, and swarms of bugs, we finally set up camp and get ready to go to sleep.
We travel west for a few more days without seeing anything. After taking a break to eat, I decide to go walk around to clear my head and get some peace. I try not to stray too far from the group, but the sun is setting quickly, cutting off the light supply. I look at the ground while I walk so not to trip over the twisting tree roots and fallen branches. A sound in the distance catches my attention. I stop suddenly, holding my breath to hear the faint noise. Shouting. I can't understand and words, but when I look through the trees, I can see lights flickering in the distance. The voices suddenly get louder, coming closer. My nerves jump and I leap from my spot, crashing through the trees, trying to locate our camp. When I reach it, I am out of breath, the others from my group who are still at the fire pit staring at me as I gasp for air.
"Hey! I saw lights and heard voices over that way!" I wheeze, pointing towards the way I just came from. I bend over, putting my hands on my knees, trying to catch my breath. Nobody moves.
"Well, wake up the others! We have to go and see what it is." I tell them impatiently. Everybody immediately stands up and scrambles to open the tents and gather their supplies.
Once we have decided to let half of us go and investigate, and the others stay back, we set off. I lead my group down the path I took, which is easier to find now, for the trampled branches and bushes. After a quarter of a mile, the tree line suddenly ends, revealing a small cluster of squat concrete houses. Everything is quiet now, except for the scraping of our shoes on the muddy ground. It is almost pitch black now. I can't see anything but the lanterns hung at every door of every crumbling house.
"How are they lit? Where is everyone? If the lanterns are lit, there would have be people here to light them," Tobias says, lowering his guard for a moment to look around in confusion.
We decide to slit up into pairs to scout the area, Tobias and I taking an alley way to the left of where we were grouped. I take out my gun, getting a feeling that I will need to protect myself against some kind of threat. The alley opens up to an area where a group of houses back up against each other. The light doesn't reach here, leaving everything drenched in a veil of black.
Our foot steps echo in the empty buildings. We walk slowly and carefully, making sure there is no one around. We keep our guns ready, cautious of any movements. I do not see anything for a while, but for a moment, I think I see something move in the corner of my eye. Tobias must see it too because he pushes me behind him protectively.
"Stay right here. Don't move." He steps gingerly towards the site of the movement, his gun held at ready.
Suddenly, something small and round flies from the shadows. It lands in front of Tobias, rolling to a stop next to his foot. I know that it can not be good. The communicator seems to appear in my hand, and quickly press the button to signal the Dauntless without a second thought. While I am doing this, I try to tell Tobias to get away from the thing that was thrown at him, but I don't get a chance to. The small, round object explodes, almost knocking me off my feet. The explosion is small, but insanely powerful. It seems like everything is happening in slow motion. I scream at the top of my lungs as I see Tobias thrown to the side, blood splattering everywhere. Before I can do anything, I see pieces of metal that had been propped against the walls flying at me. Something hits me in the head, hard, and everything fades into darkness.
I hope you enjoyed this. There is a lot to come, so get ready. AND DON'T FORGET TO FOLLOW AND REVIEW!
