Prelude To War

Tuesday, February 16th, 2021 - 12:05 AM – Ueda Residence, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan

Hana laid in her futon staring at the ceiling as jets roared over her house for the eleventh time that night. She started to think about her friends; last week her school was closed down due to lack of attendance, most parents were keeping their children home out of fear. Mari and her family had left the country this week.

She though back to when her life, no, everything started to change. It all started on Christmas last year; her mother received a phone call and quickly turned on the TV, she didn't remember much about what happened that day except the Prime Minister announced a state of emergency. The next day the Self-Defense Forces and US Military began taking control of airports and harbors, it had been announced that international travel would be reserved for military and government authorized travel.

Soon after the government announced that several countries were accepting refugee and a lottery was established to decide the order of evacuation. It was also announced that all lines of communication were now monitored and any attempt to cut in line would result in blacklisting.

The sound of trucks passing by broke temporarily broke her from her reminiscing, they probably carrying American soldiers to the eastern coast. She drifted back to when she first saw Americans, in January several ships docked at the SDF controlled Shimizu Port. The next day the police blocked off one of the main roads that ran past her school, around their break several large trucks started to go by. Several of her schoolmates gathered by the front gate, she soon joined them. The soldiers waved to us and we waved back. What shocked here the most was how young they were. Boys and girls, around the same age as her older brother.

As Hana had finally fallen asleep a ship departed Shimizu Port carrying people to relative safety; another quickly took its place, carrying troops and materiel.
