Title: Why we wait
Pairing: Sophie/Nate
Summary: Drabblish look at the thoughts of Sophie.
Spoilers: No real spoilers
Disclaimer: I own nothing.
Sophie wasn't an idiot, she knew that after a show when she asked Nate what he thought of the performance he'd struggle for words not wanting to tell her how bad he thought it was, how she probably should give up the ghost of her acting career and stick to the con like the rest of them. Instead he smiled and told her that he thought her performance excellent even though he almost always slipped up just a little. And she'd pretend that she believed him. It was all part of their twisted relationship, one of the parts that she liked the most. The fact that he cared enough about her feelings to lie about her stage acting made her feel like maybe they stood a chance. Like maybe the love she felt for him wasn't as unrequited as she had thought. Sure they had a connection but that didn't necessarily mean that he wanted to be with her. He had already said that he wasn't exactly keen on the thought of marriage and to be honest she had never really seen marriage as a possibility for her future either. Not until she had met him at least. Now she had all of these thoughts swirling around in her head all the bloody time. Working out how she felt about him was hard enough at the best of times but trying to work out how he felt just gave her an almighty headache and usually she ended up with a new pair of shoes just to quiet the noise in her head. Now shoes she got. That and the con. Something perfectly simple that didn't involve personal feeling. That was always when things got messy when you started listening to your heart instead of your head.
So instead of voicing the fact that she had in fact been in love with him for the best part of ten years, that the thrill of his chase had been better than stealing the art in the first place she'd smile and thank him then let him buy dinner or a drink as was becoming more frequent now and she'd push all of those feelings into a box and lock it tight until the next he did something sweet and caring.
