Welcome to 'Just a little nudge' part Four of the Medical Examiner Saga
I decided to put this up today since it's my birthday as a gift from me to you guys lol.
This story is set around two months after 'This isn't a date'
I haven't forgotten the other stories and while it may appear that I'm focusing solely on new stories, I promise I'm not. The Medical Examiner saga was originally going to be a single chapter story but I decided last minute to make it into a group of one shot instead.
Anyway, please enjoy part one.

Part Four of the Medical Examiner Saga
"Okay, come on, tell me what's going on because you've been looking really preoccupied over the last couple of day to the point that you haven't even lectured me for not clearing up after myself the instant, I make any mess in the house."
Steve McGarrett blinked, looking up from his plate of half-eaten toast to focus on his sister who was seated opposite him on the island counter, her hands wrapped around a mug of what he assumed, given what time it was, was her normal early morning coffee. The expression on her face was one of annoyance and concern mingled into one.
"Wait, are you actually complaining about the fact that I haven't been nagging you Mary because that has to be a first, should I be the one asking you if you're okay?" He countered with a raised eyebrow.
"Don't turn this around on me Steve, I asked you my question first which means that you have to answer me first before you start asking questions of your own. It's the rules of the household." She stated firmly.
"The rules of the household?" Steve repeated with a frown. "I wasn't aware of that rule, which given the fact that this is my household, you would have thought I would have been."
"Well the fact that you haven't heard of it, isn't my problem. You've heard of it now which means that you have to abide by it while I live in this house which means that it's time for you to answer my question with no more delays."
Steve opened his mouth to point out that his sister was actually a guest in his house and that was only because he had taken pity on her but quickly decided that saying that to her wasn't the best way to do this. If he said that to her then it would simply cause an argument between them and that was something which he could seriously do without when his thoughts were already racing all over the place.
"Fine" He said instead after a long pause. "What was the question which you asked me then? I'm all ears." He said, twisting slightly in his seat so he could face her head on, meeting her hazel eyes directly. She looked briefly surprised as though she had expected him to argue the point more before she set her shoulders and spoke.
"I want to know why you've been so preoccupied recently; you've barely spoken over the past two nights and it's clear to anyone that something is troubling you. It might actually help you if you spoke to someone about it, you can talk to me or if that is too awkward then you should speak to one of your friends, I'm assuming you do have some right?" She asked him in a teasing manner which he picked up instantly.
"It's… it's a complicated issue Mary." He said finally on a sigh as he rested his elbows on the counter top and briefly rested his head in the palm of his hands trying to ignore the mild throbbing pain in his head which warned him on an impeding headache.
"Well luckily for you big Brother, I happen to do complicated extremely well so hit me with it and let's see if we can figure it out for you, right her and now." She stated, the remark causing Steve to let out a startled laugh as he lowered his hands.
"I wouldn't even know where to begin Mare." Steve confessed.
"Aunt Debs always said that the best place to start with any story is at the beginning, if you start there then the rest will follow. So, based on that, let's narrow down the cause and take it from there. Is the issue that's bothering you something to do with work?"
"No everything to do with work is fine at the moment." Steve told her with a shake of his head. "Don't get me wrong, it's hard work and it's stressful but I knew what it would be like when I signed on for the job in the first place."
"Okay so work is a no then, what about the team mates who you work with? Any issues with any of them?" Mary pressed, an almost careful note to her voice as though she was worried about pushing him too far and being shut down.
"Nothing with them either." He replied shortly, casting his mind back to his team and once again sent a silent prayer of thanks that he had met and recruited them to the taskforce. It had taken a few months for them to gel together as a team but now that they had, they were finally working the way Steve had always known they would.
"Right, so it's not work and not the people who you work with as a whole." Mary mused thoughtfully, biting on her lower lip until she let it go and looked back up at him. "What about Danny then?" She asked.
"Danny?" He repeated, his heart rate picking up in speed at the mere mention of the name.
"Yeah Danny, your partner, remember him? The loud blond guy from New Jersey who loves to complain and wear ties even though it's seriously too hot to be wearing them in Hawaii and who constantly eats all the peppermint patties from the freezer every time he's around here."
"Ah, that Danny" Steve said with a grin at the description his sister had used to describe his best friend.
"Yep, that one" She confirmed.
"No, everything is the same with him as usual, still the best, if most annoying partner, I've had."
"I'm pretty sure that if he was here now then he would point out to you that technically he's the only partner that you've had and that your time in the Army doesn't count." She pointed out to him with a grin.
"Navy Mary, it's the Navy, you've been spending way too much time with Danny if you are starting that up."
"Maybe, maybe not." She replied falling silent and tapping her fingertip against her mug before she spoke again. "So, if it's not about those three things then is it something to do with your Thursday thing."
"Thursday?" Steve repeated with a frown at her.
"Yeah Thursday, you know the day after Wednesday and before Friday?" Mary pointed out blandly before her voice changed again becoming more thoughtful. "You tend to always come back late on a Thursday night, when you do come back you never eat meaning that you've already eaten while you were out and on top of that, you seem happy and content which isn't exactly something I'm used to seeing from you."
"Oh Thursdays" Steve said, keeping his face expressionless though from the way his sister face lit up, he had clearly failed.
"Okay, okay, this is good, clearly we are beginning to get somewhere now. So, whatever it is which is troubling you has something to do with the Thursdays."
"Maybe I should hire you to come and work in Five-O since you've clearly got some Detective skills which you've been keeping from me." Steve said mildly, his mouth tilting up into a small smile when Mary laughed at the comment even as she shook her head at him.
"We would kill each other within a week if we worked together." She stated honestly before her eyes narrowed slightly at him. "And don't think you can distract me from this either. We aren't leaving this kitchen until we get to the bottom of this."
"I wouldn't dream of it Mare" Steve replied sounding vaguely amused as he picked up his own mug and took a sip of the lukewarm coffee.
"Good, now who are you with exactly on these Thursdays because I'm assuming, you're spending time with someone." She asked him with an expectant look on her face. For a moment Steve considered shutting the whole conversation down but he stopped himself, if he did that then his sister would just become more adamant about finding out the truth. He knew from past experience that she was good at giving out advice and he could use some.
"I'm with Danni" He replied after a pause.
"You're with your partner? I thought you said that…"
"No" Steve interrupted her with a sigh. "Not my partner Danny, I'm with Danni as in Danielle Richardson who is the chief Medical Examiner for Hawaii. She's who I'm with on Thursday evenings."
For a moment Mary stared at him before she sighed, raising her eyes towards the ceiling as though she was asking for strength.
"Trust you to start dating someone with the female version of your partner's name" Mary remarked with a shake of her head as she lowered her eyes again, the comment causing Steve to give her a pointed look.
"They aren't dates, it's just two colleagues going out for something to eat together." He corrected her with a shrug.
"Right" Mary replied, drawing out the word. "Let me ask you this Steve. Do you go out together every Thursday without fail to the point that both of your purposely won't make any other plans on Thursdays?" She asked him, continuing to speak when he gave her a single, reluctant nod. "And do you take turns to pay for the meal and to pick where you are going and do you perhaps make a bit more effort in the way you look on that day?"
"I suppose" He replied, raising an eyebrow when Mary snorted at him. "What is it?" He demanded.
"Well I hate to be the one to spell out the blindingly obvious to you Steve but you and this Danni are dating each other whether you call it that or not. Is that what you've been preoccupied with?"
"Partially that" Steve admitted.
"Okay good, that means that we are getting somewhere, so tell me more." She advised. "The more I know, the more I can help."
"Fine, Catherine called me, she's coming back to the island to see me because she has some leave coming up" He told Mary who made a knowing sound at the back of his throat.
"I see and you're worried because when Catherine visits you tend to have sex with one another which is normally fine but now that you have this thing with Danni happening, you think that if you do anything with Catherine that Danni will hear about it and get upset at you, ruining what you are building together?"
"Exactly" Steve said, shooting his sister a relunctant impressed look.
"There's no need to sound so surprised Steven" She grumbled before she spoke again. "The way I see it is that you have two options available to you. The first is that you call Danni tomorrow and ask to meet her for a coffee and then straight out ask her what the two of you are doing, tell her you want more and if she doesn't feel the same way and just wants to be friends then you'll finally know and you can continue what you have with Catherine without experiencing any of the guilt if that is what you want." She told him.
"And what is option two?" Steve queried after a moment when she remained silent, merely watching him closely.
"Option two is that you call Catherine and you tell her that you've met someone who you have fallen hard for, who you are dating and who you want to remain with because you want to see where the relationship goes. Say that you're sorry for not telling her about it sooner and that you obviously still want to be friends but that is all it can be between the two of you from now on and that you'll leave it up to her as to whether she still wants to come to Hawaii for her leave." Mary instructed, her eyes narrowing slightly. "There is an option three as well of course."
"Yeah? And what would option three be then?" He queried, picking up a bit of his toast and biting into it.
"Combine option one and two together. You need to find out where you and Danni stand with one another because until you do that, you'll always have doubt. I would also still call Catherine because it's clear where your heart now lies and it's not with Catherine. It would be a dickish move of you to keep her hanging on and using her when Danni is the one who you really want."
"Yeah you're right." Steve agreed lowly.
"Can you say that again and a bit louder bro so I can record you saying it and play it back to you the next time you decide to start lecturing me about something." She sated with a grin, making a show of sighing loudly in disappointment when he shook her head at him.
"How about I take you out for dinner tonight as a thank you instead. You pick the place as long as it's within reason and I'll pay." He offered as he came to his feet, rolling his eyes at her when she gasped and clutched at her heart.
"Wow, who are you and what did you do with my older brother." She demanded before grinning at him. "In all seriousness though I would like that. What are you going to do now?" She queried, grinning as he left the room, calling his answer over his shoulder at her.
"I have a phone call to make"
"Of course, you do" She murmured to herself. "Go and get her big bro."
