Believe it or not, Sora didn't want to be a killer.
In that first year, the only thing he really knew – or cared to know – about the Heartless was that they were wasting his time. They were keeping him from Kairi.
That was the only reason he chose to kill.
Maybe this was his way of repenting. For all of those lives he took, Heartless or not.
Taking the time to give Donald and Goofy one last silly grin, he shoved the Keyblade into his heart.
