It's hard to reconcile the hard-faced, camera-ready Career who surges onstage to volunteer with the girl he'd thrown fish guts at as a child. Then again, she probably doesn't recognize him as this sleek Capitol's pet, either. Is she disgusted by him? Does she hate him? He can't say he blames her. He hates this mask, especially the way it's becoming harder to tell apart from himself.
But she'll understand. The Games change people: that's what he'll tell her as soon as she wins, and she will win. She has to. And if she doesn't, he'll watch the Capitol burn.
