She was just standing there.
Not crying or screaming,
Not curled up into a ball and falling apart,
Just standing there.
If it hadn't been for one thing, you would've thought that she was just standing there.
If it wasn't for her eyes.
Her eyes were wide, hollow.
Dead.
The emotion that he had grown so used to seeing in them all the time was gone,
Like it had never been there,
Like it would never be there again.
And he was scared.
He hadn't been scared when Nero had killed all those people,
He hadn't been scared when he was falling to his death.
He hadn't been scared when he took comand of the Enterprise, the lives of thousands of people suddenly thrust into his hands.
But this scared him.
He didn't know what to do,
He didn't know what to say, how to comfort her, how tell her everything was alright,
Because he knew it wasn't.
"Uhura?"
Nothing.
"Uhura?"
"They're dead."
Her words startled him.
She hadn't said they were gone, or they wern't here anymore.
They were dead.
"This wasn't supposed to happen."
"I know"
Hollow eyes found his, and all at once, the emotion flooded them again.
Fear,
Anger,
Disgust,
And he watched,
He watched the thing he'd never wanted to see, the thing he never expected to,
He watched her break.
And a single tear slid from her eye.
She was right, this was never supposed to happen,
She was never supposed to fall apart.
