Prolouge: Third Time's the Charm

Shibuya Psychic Research, August 13th

Mai had never really considered the old adage, "Third time's the charm," before.

Now, with her hand on a painfully familiar door handle, she hesitated. What if this was pointless? She thought. It had been twice, after all, that this man had turned her down. What was there to stop him from doing it again, and embarrassing her to boot?

You should move ON, she told herself fiercely. Get over it already. Still, there could be no harm in TRYING, could there? After all, maybe this time, something would be different. Maybe this time, something would change. Maybe…

Calming her thoughts, she took a deep breath and opened the door.

"Naru," she said in what she hoped was a firm voice. "I have something to say."

A/N—So…you might be thinking "why the h-e-double-hockeysticks is she starting ANOTHER story when she cant even finish the next update to the Haunted Stage?" The answer is, this idea popped into my head while I was researching ley lines for something more original I was writing, and BAM! I just couldn't help it!

This part is short. I actually wrote it as an entire scene, but then thought it would have more impact if I did it like this. So….

Canon-wise, I mean this to be set somewhere after the White Heart novels. Mai is 17, Naru is about a month shy of his 18th birthday, and Lin is 28. If anybody spots any errors canon-wise, please let me know—I've only read a little bit of the White Heart novels, so any pointers would be most appreciated :D
