Chapter One

A/N: I am rewriting and updating this story. Hope you like it.

Remus Lupin was back at Hogwarts for the first time in many years. But this time, he was at the school as a professor. He had accepted, of course, when Dumbledore had asked him to become the new DADA professor. He struggled to find work because of his condition and being offered such a great position at the castle was beyond anything he had hoped for.

He had met his friend's son on the train here, Harry, during a run-in with some dementors, who were no doubt looking for his escaped ex-friend; Sirius Black. Harry, along with his friends Hermione and Ron, were in his third year DADA class. He was shocked when he first saw Harry at how like James he looked. Except for his eyes, he had his mother's eyes.

Upon returning to the castle he was informed that he would have an apprentice; Katya. Dumbledore told him that Katya was there as a mentor for Harry. She was supposed to watch over him and protect him, if need be. He was informed that Katya was a half vampire, and as such had stopped aging at 18, and was stronger and faster than a human. When he asked about her dietary requirements, Dumbledore's face changed, he obviously did not approve of that part of her life.

"She does not feed here at the school, and hunts infrequently. She can survive from human food, but experiences strong cravings if she goes too long without feeding. Unlike a full-blooded vampire, however, she need not kill her victims and instead can obliviate and heal them after feeding." Dumbledore had explained. Remus had nodded along, it sounded like a manageable situation. She was there as a protector to Harry in some sense, and therefore must be qualified in defense of the dark arts, to be his apprentice.

"Where is she?" he had asked. Dumbledore smiled, "Don't worry, you will meet her soon enough, she is a vampire after all- she comes and goes as she pleases to."

After three days back at the school, Remus still had not met the elusive Katya. She was only to work as his apprentice Thursday through to Saturday, and sometimes on Sundays to help with marking and lesson plans, so he was not too disappointed with this turn of events. He knew from Dumbledore, that Katya's chambers were across from his own, also attached to his office. On the Wednesday night was the first time he heard movement from those rooms. He was unsure whether he should approach her to introduce himself. Eventually, after sitting at the desk in his office for over twenty minutes, he decided to knock on her door and be polite.

He stood after knocking, waiting for the door to open. Inside, he could just about make out the sound of quiet movement from within the room, perhaps as she was unpacking or coming to the door. After a few seconds, the door opened and there she stood.

She was little over 5 feet tall, certainly shorter than himself. Her hair flowed in auburn waves down her back and her red eyes shined brightly up at him. Her skin was flawless porcelain, and her lips were rosy and full. She had a slender build but with womanly curves. She was magnificent, striking, stunning. He had forgotten to breathe, and when he did, he smelled her. Vanilla, morning dew, and something else, something utterly tempting. Her scent ignited every cell in his body, his hands curled into fists at his side, and he barely supressed a moan at her sweet smell.

She was breath-taking.

It was then he realised that inside of him, Moony howled and clawed to escape. And Remus knew then, she was his mate.

Katya stood at her door, watching the handsome werewolf, waiting for him to say something. He was older than her, physically. She appreciated his sandy blonde hair, warm eyes and scent of freshly cut grass and parchment, with something muskier and tempting beneath the surface. His eyes were switching from blue to amber as she watched him, and she felt that his wolf was fighting for control but could not guess as to why. It was at least two weeks until the full moon, she was sure.

Eventually he appeared to realise that he had not said anything yet. "I am sorry to disturb you" he offered, his voice was hoarse, "I wanted to introduce myself. My name is Remus Lupin, please call me Remus."

Kat smiled, "It's a pleasure to meet you, Remus, I'm Katya. I am very much looking forward to starting work with you tomorrow." Remus found her voice was as heavenly as everything else about her. He felt unsure of himself now, he needed to retreat to think.

"As am I, well goodnight, Miss." He said, tipping his head towards her in a gentlemanly fashion and turning away. "Goodnight" she called after his, closing the door and going back to unpacking her trunk with a smile on her face.

Remus lay in bed, staring up at the red canopy above him, still shocked. She was his mate, he knew it. He found his mate after all these years. But she was beautiful, youthful and by all account intelligent and strong. She would never want an old, tired werewolf like him.

She will want us. She is made for us and we are made for her. Our mate, human. Moony stirred within him, restless at the knowledge his mate was near and the human did not claim her.

Remus groaned, and decided to sleep and work out how to speak with her tomorrow. He needed her, he couldn't deny it. He would have to do something to gain her trust and friendship. Maybe then she would return his feelings.
