Dayanthi Manel Hapuarachi:
I had been initiated into the 5th Street Vapthos when I was ten. But that's not the worst of it. While in the gang, I had injured dozens of people. My own brother, a Texas Ranger, had tried to get me out for the longest time. He'd given up when a job opening in Canada presented him with the opportunity to get me out of gang life forever. I never told the Vapthos that I was leaving, nor did I tell them that they would never see their meth again. When we left, I put the meth in duffle bags; put it in the front of the moving van, packed everything (bed, dresser, nightstands) in front of it so that the boarder patrol wouldn't be able to get to it. I knew that once we got into Canada, I would be able to just hand it over to the officers there, telling them that I had found it on the side of the road and picked it up. My brother didn't have to know that I had smuggled the drugs into Canada. I made sure that he would never know. I didn't want him to know. But now back to before I joined the gang and ruined the life I had been living.
Our parents had always told us to stay away from gangs, because my younger brother Ernesto had been killed in a drive-bu shooting by the same gang a ran with. In an odd way, it was payback. For some reason, I knew that if I ever ran with the Vapthos I could get in deep and then when the time came, I could turn on them and hand every single gang member over to the authorities. But my opinion changed when I joined them. Though I still had the mission of revenge on my mind, and that I would eventually have to hand them over to the FBI, I enjoyed being around the Vapthos.
You see when I was six, my father & mother were killed and we were put into a sort of Witness Protection. The FBI told me that if I ever joined the Vapthos, I could give them inside information and the gang members may never know. But they found out I was working with the FBI only days after Dejon and I left for Canada. The FBI had gotten us a home in Canada where they thought we would be safe. Now all I had to do was meet them at the local high school and turn the drugs over to them, along with all the information I had collected over the years on the Vapthos. But would it be that easy? Would the Vapthos really give me up without a fight? Would they kill me for taking their drugs and turning them in?
