Brakes
Chapter 1:
-Inspired by the song 'Chasing Cars' By Snow Patrol-
The Streets of Chicago were busy and humid, Edward Masen was slowly walking home from a long day at work. His suit jacket was draped carelessly over his brown leather bag that was across his shoulder. He sighed and put his hands into the pockets of his trousers, he couldn't wait until he got home as all he wanted to do was have a long night's sleep. He took in the surroundings and shops that he passed everyday of his 25 years of age. He was born and raised in Chicago, and had always wanted to move to a quieter town. But, with his demanding yet high paid job, he had stayed.
Walking for a few more minutes, Edward spotted a young woman about his age perhaps younger, waiting at the curb side ready to cross the road. She was approximately 5ft.4, which was almost a foot shorter than his tall 6ft.3. She had deep brown hair, tied up messily in a ponytail and was wearing a bright backpack which was balancing on her right shoulder. Also in one of her ears she had a headphone. The woman looked across the road, looking right then left and making sure it was clear before she stepped out onto the road.
Suddenly, the screech of tyres was heard and a car sped around the corner. The car was racing down the road and heading into the path of the woman, where she had just crossed. The women looked up in horror and without realising what he was doing, Edward dropped his bag and ran into the road towards her. He pushed her to the side where she fell to the ground. But he had no time to move away and the car hit him at full speed. His head hit the windscreen, which cracked with the force. But Edward's body and legs took the full hit. The car's brakes screeched to stop, but it was too late and the car stopped a few metres down the road. Edward's body rolled off the body of the car and onto the road.
Screams of the passers-by echoed in the air and Edward's world went black and he was no more.
