Before You Go

oooooooooooo

"Funny," she said. "I used to hate this."

Sora turned to Kairi, no doubt startled by the sudden noise after such a long period of quiet. "Hate what, Kairi?"

"Staring up at the sky like this, when it's clear out," she mumbled. "I used to hate just lying on my back and looking up at it. I always felt like I'd start to float away. I thought all the blue would swallow me up."

"Ha. Don't worry about that. You won't float away. And if you do, I'll catch you."

Kairi smiled. "I know." She closed her fingers a little tighter around Sora's.

A breeze drifted lazily through. Waves broke. Gulls squawked. Sunlight beat down on the shore. Kairi tried to focus on these things, instead of the question that had been nagging her all day. But eventually, she had to ask. "How long?"

Sora looked over at her, frowning a bit. "...I don't know. The King hasn't said yet.

"...I'm sorry, Kairi."

"I get you and Riku back for what, a week? Then you have to leave again. Sometimes I feel like...like...I don't even know how I feel! But I don't like this; I don't want to lose you again."

"Don't worry. Riku and me, we'll come back to you!" Sora put his other hand on hers.

"I know you will. I-I just wish you didn't have to go in the first place."

Sora hesitated for a moment, then leaned over and planted a small kiss on her cheek. She blushed and looked away. "Kairi, let's not think about that now, ok? I want you to be happy my last day here."

She looked into his eyes. They had aged in the past few years, changed. She wondered if she really knew the boy that lay next to her. If she did now, would she know him the next time he came back? Or the next? Could they still be close if they were strangers?

Kairi tried to put these thoughts out of her head, at least for now. As she looked up at the sky again, she nodded and forced a smile. "Ok, Sora."
