Lily sat in her empty dormitory, face in a pillow, crying. How could she have been so stupid? He had never really liked her. The only reason James had asked her out was to complete his collection of broken hearts. He won them and broke them and won new ones. That's how it had always been and always would be. James had always had her heart, but she would never say yes, never giving him the satisfaction of breaking her heart like he had all the others. She had always been strong enough to say no. She knew it would benefit her in the long run to stay away from him. It was hard, keeping up the façade, and it didn't help that she was good friends with one of his best mates, Remus Lupin. James was always with him, joking with her and asking her out. He didn't realize she was internally smiling every time he called her Lily Petal. (Most likely because she was externally screaming) She loved him. There was no doubt about it. But she also completely loathed him. He was a jerk to her best friend. Every time he got angry at them for hexing or jinxing him they would jeer "Calm down Snivellus!" It was ironic, really, because it angered her more than it angered Sev. She had to push away that fact that she liked him so that she could properly threaten him, only to later look back, not believing that she had said that to the guy she was madly in love with. She tried to regain her composure but failed miserably. Finally she used a charm to keep them at bay and walked down to the common room with her favorite book. The rest of the students were at class so it was silent. Slugghorn had made class option for some students who marked high enough, something Lily was extremely grateful for because she, being a prefect, would never just skip class. She started reading her book, Romeo and Juliet, and immediately started crying again. She stopped when she heard footsteps behind her. She turned to see none other than James Potter descending down the boy's staircase.
