Darkness was all around him. Closing in. Swamping him. Just touch to guide his way, just hearing to show him what's there, just darkness in his vision.
Alex Rider had no eyes.
Damn Major Yu! His twisted operation had left Alex blind. Yes, he had been rescued eventually, but not before he had also lost a kidney. And Reef Encounter had lost their lives. Royal Blue had gone off. Alex hadn't been there to stop it.
"Alex?" Sabina Pleasure's voice called out to him, but he turned away. Shame, grief, anger passed through his mind. He had let them down. He had let everyone down. Ash, Jack, Sabina, MI6. ASIS, but most of all, himself.
"Alex, you can't keep beating yourself up about it. There was nothing you could do to help. There was nothing you could do..."
Her face... Just for one last time, he wished he could see her beautiful face. A tear gushed from his empty eye socket. He had no way of blinking it back. He just wanted... to see her...
"One last time." he whispered to himself.
"What?"
"I wish I could see you once more. Just so I could tell you... and you wouldn't think I was lieing, because you would be able to see it in my eyes. But how could you see the truth now?" He was shouting by this time. "How could you tell if I was angry or upset or sad or happy, how could I see anything, like sunset on the horizon, or fireowrks, or the ocean? How could I see you, or Jack? Hw can I do anything anymore? I can't see, Sabina! I can't see you... or your beautiful face. Sabina... I love you..."

And to his dying day, Alex never forgot the taste of strawberries on her lips, or the sofness of her hair, or the smoothness of her skin. He never forgot his true love.
