Daniel Potter gazed down at his young wife. She was lying sleeping in the hospital bed, tired out after giving birth to their first child. Daniel sighed heavily and turned to the baby; he was so tiny and fragile. This was the last time Daniel would ever see him. He turned back and breathed a kiss into his wife's tousled black hair. "I love you." He whispered. Then he thought of his son. "Look after James." He walked out of their lives.

"Happy Birthday," A high cold voice whispered those words into the young boys ear, before pressing a wand tip to the child's arm. A group of black cloaked figures laughed demonically, as the boy squirmed , eyes filling with tears as he bit his lip until the blood trickled to stop himself screaming in agony. He blacked out, but then woke to his cousin's smirking features. "Happy Birthday, Sirius." She sniggered.

Remus Lupin opened his eyes and his parents came into view. His mother was crying quietly. "You are so stupid! Remus, how could you do that?" His father yelled at him. Remus moaned softly as the realisation of what had happened the previous night came back to him. "Oh, God. Remmie? I'm sorry. It was just.such.such a shock. You do know your mother and I will support you?" Remus mumbled incoherently and buried his face in his pillow.
