Booker muttered a curse to himself when he saw the Columbia Police checking citizens in oder to move farther into the city. This was going to cause a problem and he really didn't want to start shooting with civilians present and Elizabeth in the open. Then Elizabeth whispered to him, "Mr. Dewitt, over here" and hurried over to a side door with a large padlock on it. Before Booker could ask what she was going to do Elizabeth had already twirled through the lock's tumblers with a hairpin and was hurrying him through the door before anyone saw.
"Where did you learn to pick locks?" he asked with a surprised expression on his face. Elizabeth turned to him with a grim smile and said "Trapped in a tower with nothing but books and time on my hands? You would be surprised at some of the things I know how to do." As she started examining things in the room, Booker though about what she had said, and what it would be like to experience everything in life through only books. "Elizabeth, has anyone ever been with you? I mean, were you always alone in that tower?". She stopped looking around and turned to Booker, giving him a look that was a mix of appreciation and fear, " I've never had anyone, except the Songbird, but he doesn't say much. So besides you, no, i've never had anyone to talk to."
Booker took a step closer to her and said softly, "Well while we're trying to get you out of the city, if you want to ask me anything, or talk about life outside of your tower, just let me know. I can't imagine what it must have been like, trapped alone in there for so long." Elizabeth looked up at him and her bright eyes began to water as she tentatively reached out and took Booker's hand, "Thank you" she said, "I don't know who sent you or where we are going to end up, but I'm glad that you found me." As she rubbed her thumb over the brand on the back of Booker's hand, he had the feeling that she was what he had been looking for all along.
