Gave a Ride
Written by Douglas Voltin

It was the year 2009 in mid October around 9pm. I was by myself, driving on the way back home to Phoenix from Showlow, AZ. There were very few cars out on the road which I would see one or two vehicles going to the opposite direction about every 45mins, and after that it seemed as though I was the only one on the road. There were no cars that I can see that were broken down along the side of the road during my drive back, and I was about 1hr 30min. away from Phoenix.

While I was talking on the HAM Radio just to help kill the time and loneness, I have seen a couple walking toward the same direction that I was traveling. I knew from previous travels from the Showlow the last place that you would want to be alone at night is in the desert. There are big cats and other carnivores that like to patrol at night looking for food. Against my better judgement, I pulled over and offered the couple a ride. The couple was about in their 20s man and woman.

The man looked like he was about 6' 1" and a little on the husky side and wearing a hat. The woman had dark brown hair with medium build. After the couple got in for a ride they had told me that they had wrecked their car in a ravine going back to Phoenix. "Are the both of you ok?" I asked. They told me that they felt ok, but of course they felt their car was a total loss. I asked if we can turn around and try to find their car, so we can notify the proper authorities of the accident.

They, both agreed and we proceeded to turn around to go back to the scene. After we arrived there was the car down what looked like a 65 ft. drop. Neither of us had cell phones on us, so I turned to my radio and called 9-11 with help of a local radio tower that I tuned my radio too. I gave information about where the accident was, and that I have survivors waiting in my vehicle with me. A few minutes later the police, paramedics, Fireman, and the ambulance came. We all watched while the Firefighters propelled themselves down the ravine where the car was and found two bodies in the car, a man and a woman. "How can there be two bodies inside of that car, when the passengers who were in the car are standing right here beside me?" I asked one of the firefighters. As I turned to point the firefighter towards the passengers they were nowhere to be seen.

After talking to the authorities I decided to go on home hoping that I didn't have to make any more special stops along the way. After I arrived home, I noticed that everyone was already in bed. I went into my office that is on the other side of the house to check my emails and do some bookkeeping. After I was all done, I turned off the light in the office and went into the kitchen to get some water before going to bed. While I was in the kitchen I turned on the stove top light so I can see what I am doing, and when I turned to get a cup I noticed standing on one side of me there was the Man and the woman. "We came back to say thank you for all that you did for us." Said the woman "It was nothing" I replied. "It met everything to us this way our next of kin can be notified, and we can now go to a better place." Said the man. Just like that they were gone. I haven't seen or heard from them since.
