So You Think You'd Like to Work in Muggle Relations?

Muggle Relations is an exciting and rewarding field of work. Most witches and wizards who choose this career path work in the Department of Magical Accidents and Catastrophes, which includes the divisions of the Muggle Liaison Office and the Muggle-Worthy Excuse Committee.

Muggle Liaison Office

Employees of the Muggle Liaison Office are primarily responsible for keeping the International Statue of Secrecy of 1692. They work closely with Obliviator Squads to modify the memories of Muggles accidentally exposed to magic, and are also charged with the task of delivering Hogwarts letters to the homes of Muggleborn students.

Muggle-Worthy Excuse Committee

Employees of the Muggle-Worthy Excuse Committee think up excuses to explain magical incidents where the sheer number of Muggles involved makes memory modification near impossible. The Committee only covers accidents involving magic of witches and wizards. Events relating to magical creatures are assigned to the Office of Misinformation, a division of the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures.

Requirements

A passing grade – "Acceptable" or higher – on your Muggle Studies O.W.L. is necessary for any serious candidate, but much more important is your enthusiasm, patience, and a good sense of fun!

A N.E.W.T. in Muggle Studies is suggested, but not required. An O.W.L. or N.E.W.T. in Charms is also appreciated, but, again, is not required.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: When will I work?
A: Muggle Relations employees usually work regular Ministry of Magic hours, five days a week, but will sometimes work over weekends and holidays or at night when the Ministry needs all hands on deck.

Q: What classes do I need to take?
A: See "Requirements" above.

Q: What is the average salary of a Muggle Relations worker?
A: It all depends of your position and specific job, but usually at least 2500 Galleons a year.

Q: What's the best part about the job?
A: Most employees agree that maintaining the balance between the Wizarding and Muggle worlds is the most rewarding aspect, while others simply like working with Muggles.

Q: Are there any post-Hogwarts classes I need to take?
A: No. Unlike the Auror Office or Magical Law Enforcement Squad, employees in Muggle Relations continue their education through on-the-job experience only. Occasionally, an international conference or seminar becomes available, but such conventions are completely optional.
