After the darkness

He never knew darkness could be so complete before it devoured him.
He never realised that the days were so bright before he had lost them, stuck in a never-ending night.
He never knew his hate could run so deep nor that his love would drive him to the darkness and out of it once again.
He never knew his heart could be so strong and now the sun warmed his skin as he lay on the compact sand, listening to the waves crashing into the rocks. A fragment of a memory fluttered through his mind, a memory of the days filled with darkness and pain.
A joyous voice called his name and snapped him out of the dazed he had been in, a daze clouded with thoughts he had gone over a thousand times and flickers of memories he wished to forever forget. He opened his eyes as he sat up and was met by a smile and eyes so blue it could not be possible. The lips were still smiling as they asked if he was alright. Hi head responded with a nod before his arms pulled the blue-eyed friend down next to him. Said friend giggled, eyes sparkling, before hitting the sand.
The sun was finally setting over the (now calm) water; casting its red glow over the two friends sitting next to each other, enjoying their view in silence. They had already passed the stage during which words were needed and moved on to where the others presence was everything and some more.
As the sun left the sky the realisation that this was life came to him. This, sitting at the beach for a full day and doing nothing, was more than enough to chase those cold days, bad thoughts and dark feelings away. And he realised as the red started fading that after the darkness there must be light.
For him light was those smiling lips and sparkling blue eyes.
