Silver by Elise

Sterling

You remember brighter days, days when he used to shine. As your friend, he shone, and as your lover, he was incandescent.

You like to think that some of that glow transferred itself to you, that you were not the shadow that marred the perfect span of his brilliance. To him, you were no longer the timid boy that everyone wanted to see; he knew you from the inside out and loved every flaw and scar.

In the chaos of cliché and love, he was always your constant. At the end of the day, he still shone just as brightly.

Tarnish

Twelve years, and all you can do is wonder where his sparkle has gone. You hug him because you feel you should, but you are as empty as before. He doesn't have enough light to fill himself, so how can you expect him to shine for /you/ again?

Irrationally, you are almost angry at him for changing. You have to swallow the fiery tendril of resentment before your unshakeable façade is again in place, impenetrable as ever.

You search and search for a hint of the familiar glow behind lackluster eyes and sallow skin, but there isn't even a glimmer.

Shimmer

It has been long, taxing repair, but you do not regret it. If had taken years upon years to reignite that glow, you would have struck at matches futilely for ten times as long.

Both of you are different, learned in the ways of the world, older in more than just body. He is not the iridescent sun he once was, but a subtle, bittersweet shimmer that you have learned to love.

It is not often that you wish things had been different. You can't look directly at the sun, but you can feast your eyes on a star forever.
