I love you.

Three little words. They were just three little words-but why were they so darned difficult to say?!

This was what he found himself thinking one day as he watched her sitting at the desk, writing something. She often wrote nowadays-he never questioned what she was writing. He supposed it was something personal, like a diary entry or something-God knew that she hardly ever confided in him.

Idly, he wondered why that was.

He watched her for a few moments-watched as she chewed on her pen a little; as she flicked back a lock of her hair. He found himself smiling unconsciously-it was little things like this that drove him insane.

How many years since they had known each other? Through everything, through everyone, he always found himself turning to her. Through it all it was so obvious that he had been falling in love with her.

Then why was it so hard to tell her?!

He was so deep in thought that he didn't notice that she had been looking at him. God knows how long she had been doing it for-he didn't think he wanted to know! As she smiled, however, it didn't really matter anymore… nothing really mattered anymore…

"Are you okay?" she questioned lightly, blinking her round, beautiful eyes slowly. His mouth went slightly slack and for a moment he found that all he could do was stare at her, before he snapped himself out of it and smiled himself.

"Yeah, I'm fine."

"Are you sure?" Her voice became slightly worried now, and her fine eyebrows furrowed together as she studied him, trying to tell for herself whether he was fine or not.

"Hey, I'm feelin' great, okay?" He got up and walked over to her, before grinning down at her.

"See? Right as rain." She giggled slightly and he found his heart doing funny little jumps at the sound of it.

God, he had it. He had it bad.

"Yeah. Then I find out you're talking about acid rain."

"Witty. Very witty!"

"I know, I'm good like that." She grinned and turned away from him, and it was at that point that he found that he could easily see down her top from this position…

His face went a very deep red.

Down, boy.

"So you're sure you're okay, then?" she asked once more.

"Hey, what's up with the questions?"

"I just… I just care about you, that's all." She lightly grabbed hold of his hand and held it in a lovingly kind of way for a moment, smiling slightly, and it was at that point that he decided he had to tell her.

She had to know. They both could die at any moment-he wouldn't let that happen without letting her know how he felt.

He opened his mouth, and the words were on the very tip of his tongue…

I love you!

"I… lore…" He didn't notice that she had already gotten up and was already on the other side of the room, and his heart fell a notch.

"Hey, I'm going to go get something to eat," she called out. "Do you want something, John?" He sighed inwardly and slowly shook his head.

"No, I think I'll be okay, Monica." She turned away and left to go into another room, and John Doggett found himself sighing again, shaking his head slowly.

He felt like an ass. He was an ass.

They were just three little words…

Too bad he didn't notice that Reyes had written the same three little words about him on that piece of paper…
