Just Tonight by Elise

"Pads?"

"Go, Jamie. Just-just go."

"I need to talk to you."

"You don't. You have about a million things you need to be doing right now, and talking to me isn't one of them. It's not every day that you're about to get married."

"You're a bit more important than making sure the cake and flowers are perfect. Just a bit, mind. The last thing I need is for you to be getting a big head on me."

Sirius rolled his eyes, but a reluctant smile pulled at the corners of his mouth. "Alright, then. What d'you need?"

The grin fell from James' face like a sudden rain shower, and the paleness of his face and fatigue in his eyes were made obvious without the near- constant grin to mask them. Sirius said nothing, and waited as James took a seat beside him on his bed.

Pause. "I could love her-I do love her. But it'll never be the same."

Sirius didn't need to ask what he was speaking of. He inhaled sharply before replying, turning his eyes away. He couldn't look at James, not while he told him this. And although it broke his heart, he whispered, "It could be, if you let it. It will be, because you love her."

James swallowed the 'I love *you*' that attempted to form in his throat. While, in a sense, this was true, he would not have meant the words the way they would have sounded. Putting his fingers under Sirius' chin, James brought the familiar face upwards, forcing Sirius to meet his eyes.

The moment should have passed quickly enough, but both held onto it, dragging the seconds into minutes that never should have existed. And still James did not move his hand, instead leaning across the weighted air to meet Sirius' lips with his own: chaste and short, but, oh, he *wanted.*

Sirius pulled away, almost panicked in his haste, gasping, "James, don't. We've moved on, both of us- you can't do this. I'll always-and you'll-but don't make it any worse. It's not worth it."

"I know. I know," but he kissed Sirius again before he sat back. Evening turned into night, and words turned into kisses into sweat and panting and lust (love?), but in the morning, he was gone.
