Writing Prompt:
Write about a special stone.
Afternoon sun shone down on the grounds of Hogwarts. Two students sat under the shade of a tree, away from the other students who were outside. Black oily hair and bright red hair mixed together as they lay on the grass. Severus Snape was turning over an object in his hand. Lily Evens glanced at him.
"What's that?" She asked sitting up. Her green eyes shining with interest. Severus sat up and showed Lily the round polished stone he was playing with.
"It's a stone," he replied. He ran his long nimble fingers over the smooth surface.
"Can I see it?" Lilly asked softly. Severus hesitated a moment before relenting and handing her the small black rock. She cradled it in her palm. Severus watched her marveling at the stone.
"Do you like it?" He asked.
"Yeah Sev, it's nice." She looked up from the stone and smiled. "Where did you get it?"
"My aunt gave it to me," Severus said. "She's dead now."
"Oh, I'm sorry." Silence fell between them. The sound of laughter drifted over from the lake where a group of four boys were sitting. Lily scowled slightly when she saw the scruffy hair of James Potter. She turned away from the lake to face Severus.
"I have to go," he said. He stood up and brushed the stray pieces of grass off his pants.
"Oh, okay," Lily replied. She got to her feet. "Here's your stone back." She extended the hand holding the black stone.
"You keep it," he replied with a faint smile. Lily smiled and put in her pocket. They walked back to the castle.
Lily Potter was putting things away in their new house. She pulled out a box of random objects that she had accumulated over the years. Opening it she looked at the various objects. There was a picture of her and Petunia with their parents and one of her and James with Harry. There was a necklace that Remus had given her in their sixth year of Hogwarts and her acceptance letter. A black stone at the bottom of the box caught her attention. Lily held it in her palm, running a finger over the smooth surface. She had hardly spoken a word to Severus after he called her a mudblood. Lily had wanted to forgive him but, she was uncomfortable with his use of the Dark Arts. Severus had sent her a congratulations card when she and James got married and then again when Harry was born.
"Say hello to mummy," James said behind her. She turned around to see her husband holding their laughing baby.
"Hello Harry," Lily smiled at the small baby.
"What's that?" James asked. He was looking at the black stone in Lily's hand.
"A gift from a very old friend," she ran a finger over the polished surface. "Severus gave it me during our third year at Hogwarts." James raised an eyebrow at the mention of Severus's name but said nothing. "You should make peace with him."
"Why?" James asked. Harry cooed softly and tried to grab James's glasses with his pudgy hands.
"Because he was a very dear friend of mind," Lily replied evenly. "I'm going to ask him around to see Harry sometime."
"Okay. Um when where you thinking about asking him?"
"I was going to ask him after we celebrated Harry's first birthday with Series, Remus, and Peter." Lily put the stone back in the box and closed the lid before taking Harry from James. "Now let's go make some dinner."
