A/N- This was written as a drabble, so it's probably not fully expanded. However, I like it. Enjoy!

Lily shut her eyes as the curse hit her. It was inevitable. She knew she was to die tonight.

But she had to do something- something to protect her only child, Harry. She had to protect him in every way possible. He was the reason, the cause for all of them to live. She had to protect them…

She drew up several memories from her own mind; memories of things she had loved. She knew this would be the final key to the spell- a life for a life, she thought. She, in her mind's eye, drifted away as those memories conjured up...

The first was of her mum, way back when she was little, and how she made breakfast that one time. Her mum! She thought. Her mum had always been the greatest of cooks. Lily had been five, so not knowing how to properly eat, she put the beans her mother had cooked on the bread Tuney had lying around(she always had a weird sense of taste). Without any common sense, she put it in her mouth and started to chew. Her mother let out a shriek, as those beans had been lying around since Tuesday, and Tuney began crying, as someone had eaten her toast. But Lily had remembered it as being the best thing ever had tasted, oddly enough. Her mother snatched the bread from her hand almost as soon as she had put it in her mouth. She never had it again, although, because it always ruffled Petunia...

The second one was in her fifth year at Hogwarts. She was walking to one of her classes (Transfiguration, she now remembered,) when suddenly, an arrow shot over her head. She quickly ducked then turned around only to see James charging toward her with a bunch of roses, adorned in a great big cupid costume- complete with diaper and ruffled pink hair. Lily silently wished she were somewhere else at that moment, while tightly gripping her books. But then James walked up and planted a big kiss on her cheek, and whispered in her ear, "You're THAT amazing, that I had to dress up in a bloody cupid costume for you."

She had remembered telling her friends that night back in the common room that it had felt that a million butterflies had entered her stomach and swept her off her feet...

The third was of their honeymoon, one of those stolen moments they had experienced on the beach. It was a perfect day- lunch on the water, sleeping in 'till 10, and dancing after dinner. This moment was just before the sun set, when the water reflected its orange glow. James had smiled at Lily, and his face lit up against the water, and Lily had felt that same feeling she felt before when he surprised her with his cupid costume- like she was going to be whisked away in a barrel of wind. It was one of pure bliss, she could tell, as James leaned in and swept her off her feet once more.

The fourth was of James that morning. His hair had been tousled after a good night's sleep, (but when was it not tousled?) and his green eyes sparkled beneath his glasses. He had been in simple slacks, with a random tee-shirt that read, "Have a Nice Day" he had gotten from Sirius that one time as a joke gift. He smiled at Lily as he pulled her into a kiss and whispered the simple words, "I love you". Harry had been in her arms at that moment, sleeping, and she had told him she loved him back. At that time, she had fully appreciated the meaning of family.

The world then turned black. Lily Potter's eyes rolled back, and she was dead.
