Are We There Yet?

"Are we there yet?"

"No."

"Are we there yet?"

"No."

"Are we there yet?"

"No."

"Are we there yet?"

"Still no."

Silence reigned for several minutes but it was not nearly long enough for the High King's taste.

"Are we there yet?"

"Edmund!"

His brother looked at him, his dark eyes wide with feigned innocence. "Yes, Peter?"

"We're not there yet!"

Edmund nodded then patted Philip on the neck. But Peter still caught the little beast smirking. He was beginning to regret this whole plan.

"Peter-"

"No! We only left Cair Paravel an hour ago! How are we supposed to sneak up on Oreius if you keep asking 'are we there yet?'"

Edmund cleared his throat and then nodded to somewhere behind him. Peter slowly turned in the saddle to meet the fierce gaze of the Centaur General. He cast about desperately for something to say to the Centaur as he stood with his brawny arms folded over his chest, watching the two of them without even a hint of amusement.

"Ahem." Peter offered a slight, unreturned, smile. "Hello General. It seems we found you easily enough."

"Indeed."

They hadn't been in Narnia long but Peter still cringed inside at that tone. Together he and Edmund had learned swiftly that that particular tone always led to something exhausting. Always.

The General's impassive gaze travelled from him to Edmund. "In answer to the question you have been asking for the last hour, Sir Edmund of the How, you are now here. Dismount. Prepare to sprint to the top of the watch tower."

Peter looked around. All he could see were trees upon trees.

"Where is the watch tower, Oreius?" Edmund asked.

The General almost smirked as he turned and pointed through a narrow break in the trees. Peter and Edmund both groaned as they saw the watch tower's outline above them at the pinnacle of a tall, wide hill, the foot of which was a good hundred or so yards away.

Oreius showed no mercy. He merely gestured sharply and barked, "Fly! To the tower!"

As he raced through the narrow path, Peter promised himself one thing. Well, two things. First, he was going to gag Edmund the next time he ever asked "are we there yet?" Second, he was going to kill Edmund as soon as they reached the top of the watch tower.
