To Celebrate or Not to Celebrate

"Oreius."

I grumbled but did not open my eyes. I was not certain why Alambiel had risen so early (my wife was a creature of comfort and very lazy by her own description) but surely she would go back to sleep if I ignored her.

"Oreius!" A soft weight leaned against my arm and then Alambiel breathed warm in my ear, "I know you are awake, Kentauri. Get up."

I opened one eye. "Why?"

She smiled. "You said last night that you were taking today off."

"Did I?"

She nodded. Then the little imp bounced, jostling me as best she could. "Annnnnd since I found out today is your birthday, I thought we should celebrate."

A mirthless chuckle broke free as I closed my eye. "There is no reason to celebrate."

Alambiel didn't answer right away. However, she did bounce again, this time landing on me (by design). "Whyever not? And why couldn't you just tell me when your birthday was instead of making it so I had to ask Stormwind? I had to endure a lot of teasing from him and Firemoon when they found out we've been married almost three years and I still didn't know when your birthday falls."

I groaned then pulled her down next to me, reluctantly opening my eyes. "It is nothing worth fussing over, Alambiel. This is merely another day."

She frowned then poked me in the cheek. "Then why do we celebrate my birthday?"

"Because it is your birthday." I smiled slightly as I added, "And it is one of the few times when you permit me to cater to your every need and dote on you."

"I see." Alambiel chewed her lower lip and then asked softly, "Will we bother to celebrate our foals' birthdays? When we have foals, that is."

"Yes, we will celebrate our foals' lives."

"Then why would we celebrate everyone's birthday except for yours?"

I chuckled at her cross look and wrapped my arms around her, tugging the minx close. "Foals need such celebrations, Wife. And I have already explained my reason for being certain to celebrate your birthday. But I need no such fuss. It is unnecessary."

Alambiel still looked rather cross. "You can't tell me that you've never celebrated your birthday."

"The last birthday that mattered was when I came of age. After that there was no reason to mark the day closely. Winter and then the Four required and require much of me. It is enough to celebrate the New Year and then your birthday, love. I need no fuss and bother over this ordinary day."

My fiery lady still did not look very happy with me. I kissed her temple then cuddled her close. "You should not let this trouble you, Alambiel."

"You're such a stick in the mud."

I shrugged. "So you inform me on a weekly occasion, my sweet."

Alambiel swatted me on the arm but didn't protest as I tightened my embrace and then lowered my head to trail kisses down from her temple, across her cheeks, and then down one side of her neck.

She relaxed but still muttered, "Can we at least have a picnic?"

"If you wish but no cake riddled with candles and icing that spells anything."

"It's still your birthday."

I stopped tracing kisses across her skin and looked into her eyes then smiled. "And you are the loveliest gift I could ask for, my Alambiel."
