Chapter One: The Picture

Chad POV

"And this is a picture of me in Preschool playing doctor at the Children's Museum," Sonny explained, pointing to a picture of her in scrubs with a stethoscope wrapped around her neck. She had one of those goofy little kid smiles on her face, with all her teeth showing. We were sitting on the couch in Sonny's apartment, flipping through a photo album of Sonny's childhood pictures.

"You were so cute," I said, and then realized I should add, "And you still are."

She blushed and let out a little giggle. "Aw, Chad, how sweet," she replied, leaning over to place a kiss on my cheek. "My preschool boyfriend thought so, too."

"What do you mean by that?" I asked, offended by the fact that Sonny had had a boyfriend before me. I know I shouldn't be too offended, since it had been a relationship between two four-year-olds.

"C'mon, Chad. Everybody has their first 'relationship' in preschool. I think I actually have a picture of us together. He even got me a little plastic ring. We were going to 'get married' and everything," Sonny said, flipping through the pages of the album. "Here it is. I can't remember his name though, it's been so long."

I stared down at the photograph on the page. It showed a little girl with wavy brown hair holding hands with a small blonde haired boy. I could have sworn I've seen that picture before…

"You know what? I think I still have the ring," she stated, getting up from the couch and entering her bedroom.

I was still staring down at the picture. That little blonde kid seemed so familiar. He was wearing a pair of overalls with a flannel shirt underneath. His eyes were blue and his smile was white. A name tag was pinned to his overalls, and I could just make out the letters, they were the same ones that spelt my name: C-H-A-D. It couldn't be me, it seemed impossible. I never lived in Wisconsin, I was never a cheesehead. I live, and have always lived, in Hollywood, California. And most importantly, I never wear overalls. But I couldn't deny it – the picture held a stunning resemblance to myself. And I have seen that picture before…in my childhood picture album.

I heard footsteps and put the album down on the coffee table. Sonny sat down beside me again, and held out a small plastic ring. "This is the ring he gave me," she began. "I remember how he used to chase me around the preschool, and once when he caught me, he kissed me on my cheek. And then, when we had naptime, we always pick spots next to each other. Then one day, he wasn't there and he never came back. I cried for a long time. I always fantasized seeing him again as a kid, but I never did."

"Sonny, he's right in front of you," I said, waiting for her reaction.

"Oh, Chad," was all she said, as she came over to sit on my lap. She kissed me before resting her head in my neck. I hugged her tightly.
