Everyone has Nightmares
A scream pierced through the walls of the temple. I knew the scream. I rushed from room to room looking for you, the echo ringing off the stone walls and throughout my head as well. Every time the screams subsided, another one came to take its place. Each one was more blood curdling than the last.
I ran through the temple, busting through each door in my way. Another scream cut through the air and my heartbeat increased again. Somehow. I don't know how long I was searching, how far I ran, how many doors I opened, but I opened one door to see an L shaped hallway.
For the first time since I heard the first scream, I wasn't running. This time I was walking, fear overcoming every sense. I turned the corner and my jaw dropped. A stone slab was on the wall with four broken wrist/ankle restraints. Blood was everywhere. I looked down and saw you on your hands and knees. I didn't dare take a step, but you lifted your head to look at me. Brown eyes were replaced with red and you glared at me. "You didn't protect me. You swore you would, but you betrayed me." I tried to form words to defend myself, but you started laughing. "You're no better than anyone else. At least they never protended to be perfect. Yhou let me get hurt. This is YOUR FAULT." You screamed the last two words and I covered my ears, backing up to the back wall. The echo would not leave me, even as you laughed at me crumpling to the ground.
YOUR FAULT. YOUR FAULT. YOUR FAULT. YOUR FAULT. YOUR FAULT.
I woke up and tried to calm my breathing. I sat up and immediately rurned to my left, letting out a huge sigh of relief when I saw you sleeping next to me. I sat there watching you for who knows how long, too scared to go back to sleep.
You were so peaceful and looked so calm. Another situation I was glad you were such a good sleeper. I didn't sleep another wink that night, simply staring at you, making sure you weren't going anywhere.
When you woke up, I stared at your eyes for a few long moments, letting out a huge sigh of relief when I saw they were brown and not red like in my nightmare.
"I promise my eyes aren't red" you said to me. I let out another sigh of relief and gave you a huge hug.
"I love you" I whispered, holding you tight against me. You returned the hug and said that you love me too. And I felt better again. Not better enough to go to sleep right away, but better.
And no matter how good I felt that day, YOUR FAULT echoed through my head just like your screams did.
Author's Note: Just a really short one shot for you guys. I think the best stories are the ones that mix fiction and reality. I figure that if a Jedi Knight turned SIth Lord turned Jedi Master can have nightmares, then us normal people having them isn't anything to be ashamed of.
I just want to shout out to two of my friends on here, JL01 and AlwaysZutarian for talking with me as life has been difficult and writing has been tough. This one was a very emotional one to write, for obvious reasons. Hope you all enjoyed. Thanks for reading.
