When she's ten, she reads Anne Frank's diary. She doesn't cry although she lies awake for nights thinking about the dead girl, the similarities between them, even though Anne Frank was older and was in hiding. She had lived in a war.
When she's eleven, she reads "The Last Seven Months of Anne Frank". It's a grim book, about Auschwitz and the war and Hitler and what happened to six other women who knew Anne. Black and Potter tease her for caring about a dead girl, a long dead girl and she tries to ignore them, but you can't ever fully ignore James Potter and Sirius Black, the Gryffindor pranksters. So, when no one's looking, she cries herself to sleep, longing to be accepted for who she is. But she doesn't care enough to pretend.
When she's thirteen, James Potter asks her out for the first time. She refuses, and he continues. The diary is still her favourite book but she has friends now .She ignores the fact they all go out with Sirius Black or James Potter. She reads and reads, separating herself from the rest of Hogwarts, the rest of the wizarding world, with the words of a dead girl. After all, Anne Frank had admirers too.
When she's fourteen, in the Easter break, after much begging, her parents take her to see Auschwitz. They expect her to cry. She doesn't. It's a terrible place but she's glad she visited it.But when she goes back to Hogwarts and is asked what she did in the holiday; they're overheard but Sirius Black. He thinks she's mad to want to go to such a place. She does not tell him why.
When she's fifteen, she defends Severus Snape from the Marauders. They used to be friends but the Sorting Hat had separated them. She's disappointed in Remus although she tries not to show it. He could've asked them to stop and Potter and Black would've done. But he's a marauder and he doesn't so she cries herself to sleep once more.
She's seventeen and of age and Head girl too. She'd been honoured when she'd been chosen even if it is James Potter who is Head Boy. She re-reads the diary once more and comes across a footnote in the afterward. Anne Frank had died on the 3rd March 1945.Exacly fifteen years before Lily's own birth. She cries, feeling somewhat responsible though not knowing why. Fifteen years is a long time, after all. She hides the diary away, not able to look at it anymore. It hurts.
When Professor Dumbledore calls the best students in her year, to his office, she finds out that a war's starting and that a man called Lord Voldemort was taking over. He told them all of the Order of the Phoenix, an organisation that defies him and fights back. She agrees to join immedietly. She knows the risks, of course but she's at risk anyway, being a muggleborn. But,she thinks, looking out of her dormitory window as the rain falls, at last she and Anne Frank are like one.
That week, when James Potter asks her out, she finally agrees. She's realised now that she's not Anne Frank, she's Lily Evans and she has to start living her life.
