I can sense it on the wind
It blows a warning to me
A warning of death and destruction
A miasma of decay follows me
I feel the others can smell it
They avoid me
Scared to come too close
In case death touches them too
They avoid me
Like death is a contagion
Passed through air or touch
To spread through the yard
Till wipe all those who are near out
To wash them down the river of time
Close your eyes and sleep
In your boat
Your isolated island
A sandcastle knocked down by the tides
A child's refuge from the world around
A feeble protection against the tsunami of death
You believe you are safe from the embrace of the final sleep
But one day you will be taken by it
You will have no choice
Or you will see the one you love die
To watch your loved ones die is a fate worse than your own death
To see them slowly die
To hear them beg you for mercy
For you to allow them to die
And as you walk out among the tribe
To see them turn their pitying gaze upon you
To hear their murmured platitudes
That is when your soul dies a death
And you become but a shade of your former self
As you wither under their watch
And every day you long to die
To be with your loved one.
