Preface
"Jake, you got dirt on my dress!"
"Well what do you expect, Sumner, you gave me a stick!"
"This is stupid!"
Nine-year-old Sumner Hollis got off of the ground, brushing herself off. She was wearing the pretty white dress her mom had just got her and her long, deep red hair fell short to her shoulders. Her incredibly deep, midnight blue eyes shone with annoyance at the twelve-year-old in front of her. Jacob Black tried not to laugh; he always found Sumner funny when she was angry. But he did feel a little guilty about her dress. She actually looked like a girl in it.
"You think this is stupid?" Jacob raised a dark eyebrow. "Do you not want to be my queen?" Sumner felt herself frown. Or course she did. When Jacob had shown up at her house twenty minutes ago, rambling on about some story his dad had told him about their tribe, Sumner was excited. The adults didn't usually tell them about the tribe legends; they told the two children they were too young to understand. But Billy had told Jacob this one. About how the tribe was tightly knit. They were family and one person was in charge; one person was the leader, who took care of everyone else, and had the final say in all the tribe's decisions. And Jacob, Billy had said, was destined to be one of them. "Almost like a king, Sumner! Can you believe that?" The older boy had shaken her a little. Sumner had punched him and told him to stop.
After reciting the legend practically verbatim to Sumner, Jacob had decided he liked Sumner's new dress and asked her to be his queen. Sumner had dutifully agreed, picking up the closest stick she could find and giving it to Jacob. He had tapped her right shoulder, then her left. "I now anoint you Queen Sumner Katherine Hollis." He poked her stomach and threw the stick down, bowing to the younger girl. "My queen." His words had made Sumner happy until she saw the small dark stain on her dress, right above her belly button.
"Well, Sumner?" Jacob now looked on impatiently at his best friend, waiting for her answer. Sumner huffed, blowing some of her bangs off of her forehead. Then she nodded and uncrossed her arms and Jacob smiled, taking her hand and leading her off to where their friends were playing in Jacob's front yard. "Good, I can't wait to rub it in everyone's face!" He laughed and the two broke into a run, the quality of the pretty white dress forgotten completely.
It was the best memory Sumner had of La Push.
