Irrational

Disclaimer: Death Note equals Not Mine. End of Story.

"Come on. Come on. Come on," Matt mumbled to himself as he pounded on his GBA. He held his breath as his screen flickered… "No…no…no…"…and then shut off. "Crap." Leaning his head back over the top of the sofa, he blew out a long plume of smoke.

"Matt?"

He winced as light abruptly shone through his goggles but refused to look at the intruder. There was no reason to anyway. He would've known who it was even if no words had been spoken.

"I didn't think anyone would be in here this late," Near said shuffling into the room. "Sorry if I'm intruding. Just looking for a toy I misplaced."

Matt expelled another plume. "You don't need to explain yourself to me. Do whatever you want."

After nearly a minute filled with nothing but the rustle of Near's pajamas and the sound of Matt's breathing, Near remarked, "You know, you shouldn't smoke inside. It's harmful not only to you but also to those around you."

Matt jerked his head forward to look straight at Near. "You just worry about you, and I'll just worry about me." With a smirk he inhaled deeply and after an attenuated exhale said, "If it bothers you so much, you can always leave."

"I prefer not to run from my problems." He stopped searching and stared at Matt who glowered at him. "I find doing so to be quite irrational." He shambled toward the door, but stopped abruptly. "But even more irrational is the act of running from, or rather, leaving behind the best thing one has going for him. That is both irrational and stupid." Near turned his head slightly to look at Matt, "Wouldn't you agree?"

A/N: Randomly came up with this while listening to Gravity by Vienna Teng. Something about it makes me think of Matt and Mello. How I got to Near from that, I'm still not quite sure.

Anywho, hope you enjoyed it. I feel a little iffy about the ending, but we'll see. Toodles for now!
