Erin sat in between Kim Burgess and Gabriella Dawson at Molly's. After work, Jay headed home to take care of their girls while she had a girl's night with Kim and Gabby. The beer that sat in front of her had only been emptied half way in the last hour they've been here.
"Erin? Where are you? Usually you'd have 3 beers gone by now," Kim pointed out.
"Yeah, what's going on? Why the long face?" Gabby agreed.
"I miss my kids. This past week's case has been a rough one. You know? I always hate when kids are involved. Especially when they're younger, like my Maddy. I couldn't imagine what I would do if something like that happened to any one of the girls," Erin looked down to her beer. "Look, I'm going to go. Thanks for the beer. I'm gonna go hug my girls, and snuggle with my husband."
Kim and Gabby waved bye as Erin stood from her stool and wrapped her coat around her body. This winter has been a bad one, not weather wise, but temperature wise. With almost everyday below 0, it's been like wearing thousands of layers to keep from getting frostbite. She made her way to the front door and braced herself for the wind that was about to hit her face. She quickly exited the bar and walked fast, but as carefully as she could, so she didn't slip on the ice. She made it to her car, which was only a couple feet away and got inside. The car was still cold, but at least there was no wind to hit her face. Her ride home was short, given that it was quickly approaching 11 o'clock.
Erin entered her house. The house's darkness set upon her. Usually Jay was awake and set up in the living room for when she got home, but not tonight. It has been an extremely long week. She placed her purse down by the door, and slipped her shoes off and made her way up the stairs into a semi-lit hallway. The only sound was of her tiptoes gently lying on the hardwood floor of their hallway.
She opened the first door she passed finding her two sleeping twins curled up on the bottom bunk. The two five year olds never liked to sleep alone. The princess night-light was shining in the corner allowing the two sleeping beauties protection from the monster in their closet. She slowly closed the door and moved onto the door across from the twins. She pulled it open to find it dark, and empty. Her baby was always in her bed at this time, and her night-light was always on. Panic began to rise into her chest as she made her way to her and Jay's bedroom just down the hall a couple of steps. She forcefully threw the door open wanting to know where her baby was.
She looked over at the bed and saw brown curls covering Jay's chest. The sight melted her heart. His right arm hooked around Maddy's back holding her closer to his chest, and his left arm wide open waiting for her, she assumed. The panic long forgotten as she stripped out of her jeans, t-shirt, and bra, as she put on one of Jay's shirts that came just above her knees. She scooted into Jay's awaiting embrace, and went to kiss his cheek.
Just as she was about to place her head on Jay's shoulder he whispered into her ear. "Hey, how was Molly's?" Jay asked as he turned his head, careful not to wake the little girl asleep on his chest.
"It was good, I left early though. You couldn't let her sleep in her own bed could you?"
"After that case? Are you kidding? She's sleeping right here, forever. Right where I can keep her safe. Wait you're telling me you wouldn't have made her sleep with us?" Jay raised his eyebrows.
"No, I was planning on ditching you and sleeping in her bed with her. You were going to be on your own. But I definitely like this plan better," Erin smiled at him. As if on cue, Maddy opened her eyes and turned her head towards her mother.
"Mommy? What are you doing here?"
"Baby, this is mommy and daddy's bed."
"What?" Maddy's eyes widened and she turned her head towards her dad's face. She smiled when she realized she was lying on Jay's chest. "Daddy?"
"Hi baby," Jay smiled.
"I love you, but your not as comfortable as my bed," Maddy admitted.
"Sorry baby, I'll let you lay between mommy and me," Jay smiled as he put Maddy down and rolled over so her was face to face with Erin.
"Why am I in here? Did I have a bad dream? Did I accidently wet the bed? I'll do better I promise," Maddy spoke worriedly.
"No baby, you didn't. Daddy and I just wanted to say hi, and make sure you were alright," Erin explained.
"Oh, in that case can I go back to my bed now. Sleeping without my Simba pillowcase is really hard."
"Yes baby of course," Erin stood out of bed and lifted Maddy into her arms. "Say goodnight to daddy."
"Night daddy. See you in da morning," Maddy yawned. Erin walked her back to her room, and placed her in her bed. She kissed Maddy's forehead and reached across the bed to turn on her night-light.
"Goodnight baby girl. I love you," Erin kissed her cheek and headed towards the door. "I'll always love you Mads," Erin closed the door and turned off the hall light as she made her way back to her bedroom to cuddle up to Jay.
Jay still lay in the same position as when she left. "So much for keeping our baby safe and protected all night. She's getting so big, I wish she was still little," She said as she returned to Jay's side and snuggled into his chest.
"Me too, she'll always be my baby though."
"You know Jay, I was thinking."
"What were you thinking?"
"We have three girls Jay."
"Really? What gave it away? Was it the pink galore, or the fact that I sit and have tea parties every day?" Jay laughed
"I am just saying Jay, we have an empty bedroom, and I want a boy. I want a boy with your face, and your adorableness. We have three little Erin's running around, I want a little Jay running around."
"I mean I'm all for trying for a fourth, but you know there's no guarantee its going to be a boy right?"
"Third times a charm right?"
"Right," Jay laughed. "Third times a charm. So I guess this means we're trying for a boy?"
"This means we are going to start trying, but if your sperm doesn't produce a boy I am not trying for a fifth kid. Do you hear me?" Erin assured Jay.
"I will try my best. We're capping it at four, got it. Rodger that."
"I really do love you, you know that?" Erin declared.
"Good, I kinda love you too."
