To Be Free Of You

Killing the man she loved is the worst, and the best, thing Rathina has ever done.
Worst, because taking a life is always wrong.
Because she wakes up in the middle of the night with screams in her ears – his and hers. She holds up her hands and the shadows of the scarlet bed curtains are like bloodstains that never wash out.
Because it is one more life added to the many on her conscience.
Because of that little whispering voice which is worse than the screams, the one that says, If only...
Because of the love she believed in despite all odds, the love she thought was real.
"My love could have saved us! It could have redeemed us both!"

Best, because of those silver eyes she almost drowned her sanity in.
Because Gabriel used her, played with her emotions, and discarded her like a broken toy.
Because he murdered Zara. The last straw to break the back of Rathina's devotion after so much treachery. The sight of that small golden-haired figure crumpling to the ground, blood spreading around her like flowers while the new grass whithered and died was what finally blew apart the cracks in Rathina's broken heart.
Because while she might still love him, she loved her family more.
"For Zara! And to be free of you!"
