At first, he's plagued by nightmares. He closes his eyes and all he sees is her face: soft, joyful, smiling. He's sees the future she'll never get to have; marriage, children, purpose beyond survival, a chance at true happiness. The scene morphs, that happiness is ripped from her eyes and now she's fearful. Afraid. Alone. She screams as the radiation burns her skin; she calls out to him, but he's just out of arms' reach. She cries out his name in her final moments, begging him to save her, asking him why he left.
And every single night, he wakes in a cold sweat, calling her name into the darkness, reaching out to an empty space, and offering no answers.
