Prologue

The Village is Dead

No one saw anything...

No one heard anything...

Of course, no one ever did, and there in lay the problem...

Her hair had been blonde under the dirt. Her eyes, now wide open, were as green as leaves pulled before they were ready to fall. The clothes on her skinny body were tattered and ripped. Her face was pale, drawn tight like the skin of a drum and she was pregnant.

The twins huddled in the corner sniffed in unison.

"Where's Aunt Addy?" The little boy asked. His blue eyes shone bright with tears but his voice was steady.

"She's not coming to get us. We're on our own now, Sam." The girl said. Her voice was also too steady for the situation.

They looked at each other in shock and then stared back at the body of what had once been the only person to care about them, their mother.
