*the wolf*

The night after the war, everyone else went home

home, sweet home

safe and sound

(well, maybe not quite

perhaps a scar or two,

or three...

or four...

or ten...

or a hundred...

but who's counting?)

because no one else left with scars as bad as hers

no one else left unsure of who they were, unsure of what they were

(and just a tiny bit unsure if they should even bother to be.)

.o.

The night after the war,

she fell on the ground and screamed and cried until she had nothing left inside of her

then she threw her head back and howled at the moon

(like the wolf she knows she is)

*o*

*the moon*

The night after the war, she stayed to help

because home would always be there

but without her help, Hogwarts might not

she pitied the children that went home,

knew they'd be facing nightmares

and waking up to face another

forced to count their scars

one or two

(those were the lucky ones)

three or four

(almost untouched)

or ten or a hundred or a thousand

(because that's what happens in war-

people break)

.o.

The night after the war,

she stayed to help

not just for the school,

but for herself

because nowhere is home when you're plagued with these nightmares

(both in reality and dreams)

*o*

*the wolf*

She doesn't think she should exist

she's

a-not-quite-almost-dead-barely-alive-wolf-girl

(a made up creature)

who doesn't want to be told that she's anything else

(because no one wants to hear lies

even the nice ones)

so she stays outside all night and tries to catch fireflies

but after a while,

they all get lost in the light of the moon

(and soon, she finds herself doing the same)

*o*

*the moon*

She spends her days chasing fireflies

that are hidden in the sunlight

but she never gives up

(has she ever?)

because the end of a war

doesn't mean the end of a person

she still dreams too big

and she still believes in creatures

(nargles and wrackspurts and blibbering humdingers)

that everyone else is convinced just shouldn't exist

(but she's always believed in everything

even the things that shouldn't exist)

((especially the things that shouldn't exist))

*wolf / moon*

She's a not-exactly werewolf

(that shouldn't really exist)

but Luna's always believed in the nonexistent

and this is no exception

she takes Lavender into her arms

(and Lavenders heart thuds fasterfasterfaster)

as she cries

sobs

howls to the moon

(the moon always shines down to guide her

even when the sun has disappeared from the sky)

Luna's heart beats steadily

whispering comfort into the ears that need it

murmuring guidance into a heart that is lost

guiding hope into a body that's falling

apart

but the moon guides her well

and after a while, the whispers of

"I shouldn't exist"

die out

and are replaced with murmurs of

"Thank you"

Because the moon is a perfect guide

(even in the darkest hours),

the moon always trusts that you'll find your way home

and Lavender slowly finds her home

in the heartbeat of the moon
