Once upon a time, one small island existed. It's known as South Island. It was never seen in any map since island swims around the globe. Numerous rumors and legends tell that island holds seven magical artifacts known as Chaos Emeralds, that give unlimited power to its holder.
Eventually, one legend caught an intrest of certain mad doctor called Eggman. He always wanted to conquer the world and build an "Eggland". And so he traveled to South Island.
Meanwhile, a red plane is about to land to Green Hill's beach. It was piloted by Sonic, a blue mobian hedgehog with super speed. After he looked around, Sonic ran towards Green Hill, just as name describes, green hills with exotic palms, sunflowers, loops and sometimes beautiful waterfalls.
As he reached the destination, he felt something weird. Usually, when he reached to this place, hedgehog was greeted by a bunch of his animal friends. Then he realized - all of animals are disappeared. Sonic started to wander around until he heard a strange noise. A ladybug robot, Motobug, was riding around. It attacked blue hedgehog, but he quicly avoided its attack and jumped directly at Motobug. Robot exploded, leaving nothing but scrap metal... And lone Flicky. Little bird quickly flew away afterwards.
Sonic thinks if someone captured all animals and encapsuled them in dangerous (but indurable) robots. But all of sudden a large bullet exploded near his feet. As he looked up, he sees Buzzbomber. Avoiding robot's projectiles, Sonic eventually busted it, freeing another animal. Trying to find the mastermind before this mess, blue hedgehog runs towards smoke behind the high mountains of South Island.
On his way Sonic sees a very large ring. He jumps onto it and sees a whole literally new and twisting world composed of colored blocks and traps. It may look disorienting, but Sonic manages to get a grip and finds a blue Chaos Emerald within labyrinth's center. Shortly after he teleports back to Green Hill.
Looking up, Sonic sees a man flying in egg-shaped vehicle and starts to chase him. The chase was long: even the route was familiar, Sonic wasn't used to new robots and traps. Nevertheless, blue hedgehog fonally chased him, as some mustached ball-shaped man was messing up with large metal capsule. As he finished, that man, being a little shocked, introduced himself as Dr. Eggman and declared his world domination plan. Obviously, Sonic didn't listen to him and poked fun at him.
Being fed up by his sarcastic remarks, Eggman jumps to his vehicle and reveals one of his deadly weapons underneath: a wrecking ball. And from this point starts a neverending duel between Sonic and Eggman.
So starts their first battle: doctor desperadaly swings his wrecking ball to, well, wreck "that blasted hedgehog", but fails so hard that Sonic takes advantage of the ball and jumps right into Eggman. Eventually ball fell from Egg's vehichle and he retreated. Sonic jumped to the top of the capsule, freeing dozens of animal friends. He jumped off to talk with them, but all of sudden ground below his feet crumbled, and Sonic eventually fell to mysterious Labyrinth Zone.
