A film outing
So they had done it. Finally, Harry had befriended Draco, who for years had been an arch enemy throughout the halls of their school. Hermione and Ron were hesitant at first, especially because of the comments that were previously aimed at them. To be quite blunt, Ron was poor and Hermione was muggle- borne. These had been Draco's targets since before they even met. When Harry had told them about his 'new friend', the two of them were rather angry, feeling hurt and betrayed.
"You did WHAT?" Hermione and Ron gasped in unison.
Harry uncomfortably switched his weight from one foot to the other, as the three of them stood alone in the Gryffindor common room.
Hermione spoke first. "Harry, you know what kind of person he is. Why would you ask him to go to the film fest with us? He has been the reason of so much aggravation and constant punishment for so long. I know you have felt hurt by him before. And he has never had anything but cruel words for Ron. And you know he thinks I'm just a teachers pet. Honestly! Why in the world would you invite him? Its not like he will have a good time, he is always in a foul mood, and he's rude and conceited, and he thinks he can do anything to anyone, and...." Hermione had started cool and calm but soon found herself angry, hot with rage just thinking about Draco Malfoy and his family, and became carried away. Ron's hand was on her shoulder as she took a deep breath and tried to collected herself.
Harry decided to take this moment to defend his actions. "Well that's just it, Hermione; I don't know what kind of person he is. For some reason, he's been acting very strange lately, haven't you noticed? There have been no insults, not pointed laughs, not even a word said in class, or, in fact, anytime. I saw him in the library the other day, and I just felt bad for him. I don't know guys, its like he was calling out for help, and you of all people would understand that feeling, Hermione, and what do you do? Your are always the first person to help. So I just sat down and asked him what was going on and when I received no reply, barely even an acknowledgement, I decided to invite him along."
Hermione slightly shrugged in acknowledgement, her arms crossing at her chest. She looked over to Ron, who raised his eyebrows, confused about the whole situation.
Harry paused and looked at his best friends, who avoided his eyes. He continued.
"He didn't say anything at first but looked up at me. I don't know. Maybe I was seeing things but he looked, well, like I had never seen him before. Sad, alone, trapped, or something. And he asked if I was sure I didn't mind. All I could do was smile because I was screaming inside my head exactly what you were just screaming at me, but my gut told me to do otherwise and I kept my invitation open, and it was accepted almost immediately after. Crab and Goyle haven't been around either, now that I think about it. Come on guys, just trust me on this one, will you?"
Ron looked at Hermione, his hand still on her shoulder, and gave his weak, I-suppose-so-he-usually-does-know-what-he's-doing-(sort of) half smile. Hermione, still frustrated, looked from Harry to Ron and back again, and, with a loud sigh, uncrossed her arms from around her front and stepped up a bit. "Well, I can see I'm outnumbered anyway. I just hope you're right about this one, Harry."
Ron shook his head in agreement. He seemed to actually process what had just been said after a moment, and almost laughed. "Befriending Draco Malfoy. Bloody hell, this is by far one of the craziest things we've ever done."
